As said above you need to build it to finish the game.
The main use of the Cyclops, for me, is in transporting huge quantities of materials. You can build over 100 wall lockers on the sub, and this allows you to transport massive amounts of building materials across the map if you want to construct a very large base.
Yes, yes you do.
Watch my video about moving on the blood kelp trench.
No, you don't need to build the cyclops to play the game, but you will need to craft the cyclops at the end of the game, as it has a special fabricator so you can craft a specific item that is required at the very end of the game.
But the cyclops is not needed during normal game play. But it has some nice abilities, mostly as a portable base.
Watched the videos, practiced for hours, just couldn't get it. It'd take me 5 minutes of trying to get one really good fast zip, and I think I managed to get two in a row without stopping, well, once! Usually I'm quite good at these things, but this particular one I just don't grok.
I’ve used it as a mobile base but tbh I don’t find it much fun moving it about
