How do people draw their maps?
I am well aware that there is no ingame map for subnautica and that it was an intended decision by the devs. I am also aware that you could triangulate certain spots inside the game to make yourself a sort of replacements map. However the maps you fin online are so detailed that I find it hard those were done using excessive amount of triangulation and it made me wonder (especially since those maps almost look identical) hoe people created them. Of course when googling this I only get fanbases subnautica maps but not once has it been explained how they were created. Maybe somebody here could tell me?

It is possible to read game files and render the entire terrain elsewhere, on a 3D modeling software or such.

The game gives you a map in the install folders. Most people have just modified those with much greater detail. See it yourself:

The game has screenshot features, and a picture frame item that lets you put screenshots in it, but the thing is... There's nothing stopping you from putting any ol' .jpg in the screenshots folder and displaying it on a picture frame in-game.

I just downloaded a map off google and have it hanging in the cockpit of my cyclops.

Ah, that explains it. Never noticed that the map is still there. That explains the maps that are available for download. Thank you.
