When the Seamoth is destroyed, all of its modules and anything in storage is lost for good. The falling debris is just for show, so you won't find anything if you search.
However, this is common and not much of a problem. You can create another Seamoth from the mobile vehicle bay. You can create additional depth modules from the vehicle upgrade console, which is built in the Moonpool (both Moonpool and vehicle upgrade console parts/blueprints must be found).
When in wrecks I always like to stay until I am close to get out of air.
In another run, I had the Seamoth parked outside the wreck in the floating underwater islands using its light to shine into the wreck.
Well, some bone sharks found it funny to destroy the Seamoth and when I came out with almost 0 O2, Ryley took that joke to his lungs. oO
Yet as they don't follow into the wrecks I am mostly safe.
Even though that one incident surely had rendered me more cautious.
You can also run them over and kill them with the Cyclops, which can be fun to do.
I also suffered a "popped" seamoth to the "Me and the Boys" having a funtime with the Sealady.
Also @ OP took this as a learning experiance. Much respect for that.
