Why do reapers do this?
I go to the dunes for a murder mission. I get out of my sea moth and start swimming towards him. I miss my stasis rifle and he just swims right past me, destroys my sea moth, then swims away completely ignoring me. I’m confused

It makes sense for it to go after the bigger object.

When reaper see seamoth it eats it its programed to do that.

Reapers have a special programmed attack that the other Leviathans don't have that activates when it sees a Seamoth. It will grab the Seamoth and thrash it around, doing 40-60% damage at best or outright destroying it (or glitching below the surface) if it drives it into the seabed.

Be glad.
In my current hardcore run, I avoided ANY contact (not even going close to any reaper).

Yesterday I was looking for the drill arm. I found the second scanable part of it at a wreck and while Ryley was scanning it suddenly a reaper came.
Yet it somewhat ignored my Ryley luckily.

After scanning was done, I took Ryley's ass out there ASAP.

because of their tiny tiny fish brain

Others explained that they are programmed to attack vehicles. They are also programmed to swim away after every attack. It will come back though.

Yup, that makes it actually very easy to get it off, if you simply feed some Peepers to it.
Just catch around 5 Peepers and it should wander off when it ate around 3 of them.

Actually that makes these pretty likable.
Even though I still ♥♥♥♥ my pants, if I don't bring some food for them except Ryley. XD

Feeding them peepers isn't consistently reliable. If they happen to go for you instead, there's a good chance you'll just end up dead (Reaper attacks do 80% damage with regular suits). It's a much better strategy to just swim away using the Seaglide. Reapers are fairly easy to outmaneuver, especially if you're moving in two directions simultaneously (e.g. swimming forward while ascending, for example).

Well it had only attacking me when I swam out of water, but yeah... 80% sounds about right according to what amount of life I had left.

But beside of that it seemed pretty safe to give them Peepers, while being under water.

I even glided there in the darkest night just to get greeted with the big roar, immediately making me switching to the Peeper. ^^

Just one minor issue:
I sometimes had this "grab animation" where the Reaper gets you and lures you into his mouth with its "horns".
I heard a creepy "crunch" sound and the screen went black.
Yet as I had a peeper in my hand when that happened, after 10 seconds the screen turned back to the game and Ryley was still alive. XD
It's like hand-feeding on the next level. :awkward:

I'll do more tests just to see, to be sure. But here's a video of me spending about 4 minutes feeding Peepers to a local Reaper I've affectionately named Mika. I've "fed" her more than once, and I've never been bitten by her. I've actually been bitten by a Sandshark before (somehow) while feeding her. She's the Reaper at the Dune's/Seatreader's Path intersection, where a Sea Emperor Juvenile swims after maturing.
