When I had a three story tank, I made sure to stocked the coral with the following: 1 Blood Kelp, 1 Creep Vine (as I had a replenishing supply of Blood Drops and Creep Vine Seed) as well as 1 Redwort and 4 Viened Nettles (which only take 1 square). I also stocked the tank with my food staples: Bladderfish and Peepers plus 1 Hole Fish (for color). I like a lot of light outside my base so I kept a tight leash on the following pairs: 2 Crashfish, 2 Jellyray, and 2 Rabbit Rays. With the non-food breeding pairs, I make sure that I do not over breed them as they take-up a lot of room. I breed the Crashfish as fuel for the Bioreactor as they take a good long time to use up (noting my Bioreactor is supplement to 10-12 Solar Arrays) - I have a long running dislike of Crashfish as they are major pain - so bioreactor fuel for them. I breed the Jellyrays and Rabbit Rays to release ususall about 25-meters to 100-meters from my base as they are both colorful and Jellyrays are great bio-lum at night. One another thing I do is ... once I have a plant room that supplies food and I get a lot of Bladderfish and Peepers... I release 4-5 around my base and soon there are schools around the base for easy food supply as well.
CONTAINMENT TANK STOCK LIMITS:
As you note, I have had to remove some of my stock fish (Bladderfish and Peepers) from time to time to reduce the stock of animals in my containment tank in order for me to be able to release egg (which you cannot release in tank if there is not sufficient room for the egg's life form in containment tank at the time of release). As I mentioned, I have a ready supply of Bladderfish and Peepers (about 5-10 of each do not count), 1 Holefish, 1 Reginald, 1 Occular, and 2 Crashfish, 2 Jelly Rays, and 2 Rabbit Rays. If I keep my stock in check, I get regalar drops of eggs from the Breeding Pairs and when a new life-form emerges, I look for the biggest to release (full sized Crash, Jelly, and Rabbit take-up 9 squares).
Also, I mention the plant content, because I do not know if the game requires certain plants and/or animal combos to be present to feed or support certain fish.
MULTI-PURPOSE ROOM STACKING & MULTI-FLOOR CONTAINMENT TANKS:
I do not mean to assume that you do not know this information though I thought I would explain that a little more in case a newbie is reading this information. You can stack multipe-purpose rooms and build alien containment tanks on each floor and provided the floor above or below has a tank the tanks will connnect and you will get a multi-floor alien containment tank. If you put multiple hatch doors in the multi-floor containment tank, it will make an elevator of sorts as you can enter on say "Ground Floor" and swim upward as many floors as you have a continuous tank and exit wherever you have built a hatch on an upper floor.
That said, if they've updated the Alien Containment so you can't add eggs if there are already 10 things per floor living in the tank, that's kind of handy.
