What is the use for observatories?
I haven't built one yet but is there a use to building one other than just having a room with a view?

The music changes when you enter to inspire your awe.

Yep music AND they make for great screen / base photo shots !

They are to you, what Nuclear weapons are to nations, prestige baby !

They are good for leviathans because they are seen as a different environment. So if you were to place one while being chased and go into it they would stop attacking you.

The Cyclops is the superior anti-leviathan contraption.

Main purpose is the view.

Secondary purpose is for relaxation. The observatory has its own calming music. Putting a chair in an observatory is the perfect place for reading through your PDA (hunger/thirst don't go down when you're sitting in a chair).

Since the observatory is considered its own biome, entering one if have a base in the void will cause the Ghost Leviathans to despawn.

Thank you, I never knew this.

As everyone said, its main and only use is really for the view. However it again can be used for other things besides it such as others have said. Have a good day.

They can also be used for single-room bases just by attaching a hatch. Large enough to fit a bed, plants, fabricator, and storage. An observatory base doesn't have any legs, so it appears to be floating in mid-water, which is a cool effect. Also, as a result of being all glass, the base is bright at night and very easy to spot from far distances.

That is awesome! Never noticed that.
Not terribly practical, but they are fun late game when you're done with the story and decide to stay on 4546B.

They're especially nice with a glass tube connector:

At the Hotel Aurora, it features as the Admiral's Observation Deck to view and command the Excursion Fleet, accessible only from the Admiral's private quarters at the top of hotel's center tower:

Yea but when you have been out, explored heaps, unlocked heaps, and not yet had time to read data pad being you have been under water with limited air, taking a seat in the observatory, to read for 15 to 20 minutes of data, catching up on everything you scanned , found etc, time clicks by faster than you might realise, and its a huge waste of food / water to stand reading, but sit in that observatory and presto, reading becomes FREE.

And as a bonus, you get a nice view !

For new players this should be really pointed out with a pop up hot tip......anyhoo.....

it's where you place the bed and sleep with a comfy view of the fish (or warpers)
