What Does The Portal Do?

Alr. Ik what the portal DOES but I was wondering what the portal in the mountain (cannon island) takes me to.

It connects to the portal on the southern floating island. It's basically a means of fast travel.

yep, there is always a slave portal and a master portal, the master portal is the only one that will accept an ion cube to power both of them up. when you reach the end game many of the portals hidden through the game will suddenly be accessible, and allow you to fast travel, i think this is to aid you in completing a recipe you need to begin to access the end game content.

I had an issue with a portal and I thought I was missusing it but maybe it's a bug...
I came across a few portals in game but never could activate any of them. I thought I would activate all them togheter in late game and didn't worry about them.
Then I reached thermal plant, found a portal that would accept the ion cube, and activated it. I went through it, or at least I tried, because after I went into the portal I never came out. Only thing I could see was a greenish screen, but trying to move forward or backward didn't work. I went out the PRAWN suit (more an accident than an intended action) and took some damage because of that, but I kept stuck in the greenish portal, now unable both to move or to see my PRAWN.
I loaded a previous save and asumed I should activate both the entrance and the exit of a portal before being able to use it.
Am I missing something? Because now I read what you said I think it wasn't as I thought an might have been a bug or something.

Yes, that's just a bug. If you have a slow hard drive, it may take a while to go through it. You can only activate one side.

I'm running it on a PS4 and truth be told, it's not that smooth.
I guess next time I try a portal I'll just have to be patient. But I'll save right before entering, just in case.
