Get a flashlight.

There is a gamma setting. From the main screen: Options > Graphics. Gamma is the first slider. Also, make sure you don't have the "Filmic" filter on.

Night should be dark, but it shouldn't be pitch black.

Flashlight, flares, or any vehicle have lights on them. Some later areas have a lot of bioluminescence.

There is no slider and no mentions of gamma in graphic settings tab. And I already got the flashlight, so I'm fine.
