What does the scanner room do?
I built a scanner and powered it, it lets me pull off the camera drones, but I can't figure out what any of this is even doing for me? It just sits there and adds no value to anything. I have to be missing something

it's the machine that goes PING!

It scans the area to find things. It has an screen showing the resources in your area, you select one of those and it will mark them all (once you have the hud chip).

It can scan for various resources in the area and allow you to safely explore new locations using the camera drones. You control these functions from the screens inside the scanner room.

Once selected, the resources will be highlighted with an orange circle. At first, these resource circles will only be visible when using the cameras. Once you craft a HUD chip, the orange circles will appear on your main display.

To use the remote camera drones, activate the circular screen. You will then take control and can pilot the camera drones around the area. They have a range of about 500 meters.

Sorry I'm new to this game but how do you get inside? I don't see a hatch or door, I've circled it over and over looking for a way in. I don't see any screens on the outside unless i'm overlooking them.

You can create a hatch on one of the sides or connect the scanner room to other base structures that have a hatch (like I-tubes). Hatches are created separately with the habitat builder.

You need quartz and titanium to build a hatch to get inside. Once powered you will see what it can do.

I...am impressed you went straight for a scanner room rather than almost any other form of habitat. Shows character. Not sure what kind of character exactly, but it is quite unique. And somewhat inspirational.

You'll have some difficulty getting it to work without an established base to power it, at least this early on, but it may help cut down on a bit of resource-searching time once you get it periodically operational - you'll be relying almost exclusively on solar power.

I have done a full base out of a single scanner room... You can put a bed in there, a couple of pots with bulbo trees, a fabricator and 1 locker, all powered by a single solar panel.

5 Solar Panels can run the Scanner Room, Power Cell Charger, and Battery Charger going full tilt with no problem. It takes a small amount of setup time, but once you farm up enough to afford that you're set. This does, however, assume you have built your scanning outpost somewhere with a high % sunlight penetration, like the Shallows.

It says 0 about character, it says I’m new to a game I know nothing about. You’re statement implies that I see the full list of all I will do in this game and I’ve chosen this instead of other things. Fact is, I’m testing different things out. I have a seaglide, a seamoth, I’ve been to the island, explored many of the wrecked lifepods, and I have a basic base setup. I only have so much I can build, so when I get something new I’m testing it out.

Weird that you would say something like this shows my character lol, one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard honestly. It’s a game where mechanics open up gradually to the player as they explore more, and new players often won’t know what new things do yet, so it’s a game of trial and error for newbies. I’m trying things bud, plain and simple

What is playful humor or sarcasm and how does it effect me, a short interrogative steam essay by OP.

He probably assumed this is the first base module you've build because you don't know you need to put in a hatch to get inside. Something that is true for all base modules in the game. So it's a not weird that he assumes you haven't build a ''base'' yet.

Also if the words ''shows character'' are one of the dumbest things you've ever heard you must be new to this forum.

Since he IS new ( or atleast was ) it's natural he built whatever the game allowed him to.
Although I would wait just maybe a little bit to unlock the multi-purpose room.
