But still I don't see that little switch thing running this game very well, if at all.
People need to get this idea out of their heads that the switch is “weak”. It’s the strongest hand held I’ve ever owned. :P
Gives me great hope in Subnautica performing well on Switch
. . . but I'm not holding my breath.
But I do think it is technically possible, perhaps with some modifications to the game.
Most indications are the game is HDD bound, or is having some other resource issue. There might even be some hardware specific bugs. GPU and CPU can be problems, but some people with lower GPU/CPU specs are reporting less issues than people with higher GPU/CPU specs.
. . . but then again, reports of "stuttering" have been rather nondescript. Nobody ever seems to say how long the pauses are or how often they happen. So maybe some people just have a higher tolerance than others.
I personally spent most of my early gaming years with 30 FPS games, so an occasional frame drop in a game running at 60 FPS isn't bothersome; I barely notice it.
The developers of the ARK port have also stated that people are overplaying the idea that the Switch is "weak."
It's certainly not so weak that it's impossible to port modern games over: After all, the latest iteration of Doom was ported to the Switch.
. . . and it is certainly true that if you look at it as a handheld or mobile device, it actually looks crazy good, especially for gaming performance. And let's be honest: The reason why so many people love the Switch is because they can have a great gaming experience on the go.
The Switch has few peers in the mobile space. Phone games are hobbled by the touch screen, low pricing expectations, and low performance of many phones. They are simply not designed well for games. The Switch, on the other hand, is designed from the ground up with games in mind, and has already seen a lot of games that simply have no equals in the mobile space.
So I'd love to see Subnautica for the Switch. But, realistically I think they have their plates full with the upcoming DLC, so I'm not expecting them to have a Switch release even planned yet.
Like someone already said. Too late. Its already on the 360, likely to be on XBONE , and will be on PS4 some time later this year. And if it comes out for the Switch, I'm buying the Switch just for this game because a Console version wouldn't be so different from the PC version at all. You could still hook up a controller or wireless controller with the PC and play it like a Console. There is literally no difference. Accept it.
That or add the option of locking framrate but that might cause other problems
I own a gaming PC and a Nintendo Switch. I don't regret either purchase.
To me, it's not about comparing the two for superiority marks, it's about how they fit into my life. I use my PC for office things too, so it is not just a gaming machine. But you can't carry around a gaming machine everywhere you go, so when I want to game on the go I have the Switch. Also, the Switch has some exclusives I love to play.
Both the Switch and my PC can output to my TV and I have controllers for both, so I can enjoy the console experience either way
Consoles definitely shine for that use case
Theoretically, a PC attached to a TV could do the same thing - but to be honest not many PC titles do split screen anymore.
That said, I do a fair amount of single player as well, and Subnautica is definitely a good game for the single player experience.
