The dead zone, the playable area's edge of the world.

It's not just about Leviathans insta-gibbing you. It's the idea of infinite space with nothing that's kinda terrifying. Also, how the ground just seems to cut vertically down into nothingness. It might be a bit unrealistic but it gives me a kind of vertigo when I reach the edge and think about it for a minute.

No doubt %100 Void with darkspace shader.
Surprised no one mentioned the mountain region. Same thing as the dunes but now the Reapers are concealed behind the rocks and hills. Especially anxiety inducing for me because I'll only explore those areas in a PRAWN suit and being stuck to the ground really makes you feel insignificantly small. I feel like I'm a mouse trying to avoid being seen by a lion.

I think the only time a cave gave me cause for panic was actually one that was tucked into the mountain region. I went into it and got lost, so with my dwindling power core coupled with the Reaper howls and noticing that I had already passed that same rock like 10 times already I started to get a freaked out.
The Deep Reef areas with shock eels, octobrains, a ghost leviathan and warpers. At night. Its the area which also has one of the hidden sanctuaries. The areas was so nerve wracking that I gave up trying to find my way to the Lost River from that side and took an alternate route.

The Void. Endless darkness. Ravaging. Hungry. Patient.

JK, in my opinion the creepiest is the Blood Kelp zone, and I shall explain:

Imagine exploring the Blood Kelp zone in your seamoth, happy and joyful. All of that will soon disappear.

You see a creepy glow behind you. AUUUGHHH!!! IT'S A GHOST LEVIATHAN!!!!!

Wrong. It's a piece of Blood Kelp. You keep exploring.

You see a shiny ore and leave the seamoth to collect it. You get swarmed by disgusting Blighters. After you kill them all, you see a strange glow behind you, and hear a roaring noise. AHHHH!!!! GHOST LEVIATHAN!!!!

Oh, wait, it's an Ampeel. Moving on.

Oh, look! Some sort of cave! You go explore it.

As you're collecting ores, you sense something is behind you. Right as you're turning around, you see a bright flash. GHOOOSSSSTTTT LEVVIIIAAATHHHAAANNNN!!!!

False alarm, it's a Crabsquid pulse. But that's still creepy. BACK TO THE SEAMOTH! BACK TO THE SEAMOTH!

And then, right as you let your guard down, THAT'S when the Ghost Leviathan strikes.

The Void is nothing compared to this.

THIS! My sweet lord 150% this......that Ghost Leviathan was one hell of a brown trouser moment LOL
I dont really find the lava zone that scary, because the only realistic threat is the sea dragon and you always know exactly where he is due to his size and noise

Deep Grand Reef for me. It's deep, it's dark and there are fecking crabsquids everywhere andI hate the creepy creaky-door sounds they make, and those EYES. Ugh. I was inside the Degasi base there and turned around, and there was one plastered against the window eyeballing me with this look for ravenous hunger *shudders*
I was just going to say that because... MY PRAWN SUIT GOT STUCK THERE...
Somehow, the Crabsquids and Warpers totally ignored me, though... I was half-way through the floor.
This has also happened to me in the Lost River at the leviathan skull, and like 4 or 5 times in the Grassy Plateus...
It depends on how much tech I have. But I have to say that in my 300+ hours I've never seen a ghost leviathan in the blood kelp of DGR. But anyways, if it's before I have the repulsion cannon then the floating islands are a bit tense because there are so many bone sharks waiting to nip you to death. Also the mountain because you can hear the Reapers from the mainland. After I have the repulsion cannon there's not much that scares me, but places like the Dunes and Mountains still raise my heartbeat because the repulsion cannon won't save me from a Reaper if sneaks up and attacks before I can get a shot off. At the end of the game though your cyclops is so powerful that you can go wherever you want without much worry. Leviathans can't attack what they can't see/hear.
Lava zone is my scariest place, i hate going there.
Blood kelp is scary mostly due to its creepy music that triggers when you get in. Otherwise it's the crash zone and the dunes because of the multiple reaper leviathans patrolling those areas
I'm about half way finished on my first play-through and I needed to make a return trip to the Mountain Island to look for some things I may have missed.
On my way out, it was at night, I got a bit side tracked and received this message....

Warning: Entering ecological dead zone. Adding report to databank.

I didn't think that was a good thing...and then this happened.

He came swimming right up along side of me...I thought I was dead, turned around and hauled ass.

That was the second Reaper I came in contact with, the first was on the south end of the Aurora. It came screaming head on and grabbed my Seamoth, crushing it with me inside. I did manage to get out and save myself to swim back to base...how, I have no clue. I wish had taken a screen shot of that but was to much in a panic.

But, The Dead Zone encounter has to be the most frightening to date for me.

I can't believe people still respond to this
Once I realized a Prawn suit could easily deal with Reapers and so could a Seamoth it was kinda of meh. A reaper did catch me swimming near the Aurora that was fun and terrifying. Game needs random reaper encounters. Once I realized they were chained to areas I lost fear. Loved the game though no complaints. Starting my second playthrough...Not sure why... I just feel a need to do it 8)
