Just be sure to explore all of the areas they lead to.
As I'm sure you should have noticed by now, foundations help put up the hull integrity of your base to stop it from flooding. Other than if you really need an area of flat ground outside this is all they are good for and as the game goes on will fast be outdone at even this.
They are not "needed" to make a base as the name might suggest.
Between these points you will soon enough have all the parts you need to make some (no doubt) fantastic bases.
