Sugar can dehydrate you, too. at higher levels. It binds water molecules and crystalizes at lower temperatures. The reason salt dehydrates you is that it causes you to lose more as you urinate so that your body can maintain its water-salt balance.
Also do you never wonder why you aren't left with an empty mug after you "drank" it?
