I think you will find your answer here.
edit:
It's been done, probably not worth your time though, the electro shock mod for the seamoth (idr the name) makes the leviathans go away no issue, and you mostly don't need to heavily explore the areas the are in either.
If by Carter Edge you mean the Void, those will always respawn as it's not an area you are supposed to be in. That space marks the end of the play area and the Ghost Leviathans there are programmed to home in on you until you are either killed or return to the playing area.
the larger fish that you see in the game ur stalkers bone sharks ya know that kind of stuff reproduce via eggs. smaller wildlife like ur standard fish, spawn by simply mating. there are no eggs involved for peepers, boomerangs, etc. there are NO eggs in subnautica for the leviathan creatures. at least not that can be hatched in containment or in the worldspace.
when a leviathan is engaged a few things can happen, one you can kill it, two you flee from it and lose its aggro, or three it flees. if you dont do enough damage fast enough the affected creature will flee from the situation, and make a beeline straight for the coordinates 0,0,0. this is true of all fauna in subnautica. this location is in the safe shallows so it can cause some rather unpleasant side effects especially if you have leviathans in the zone. you may find some of your fleeing combatants en route to the spot too. this is because they can be aggro'd on their way to the spot.
generally in my experience i have NOT seen leviathans respawn. the only ones that do dont count as a spawn and those are the ones that lie beyond the crater's edge. and those are constantly spawning and despawning while you are in the void.
Note: its possible that during your gameplay the worldspace will be "regenerating." during this time it is possible that as the worldspace is spawning into the game that the creature or its spawn point would be reset, causing it to reappear. this is NOT a designed feature, moreso what i believe to be an error of the game engine itself.
the same goes with resource "nodes" the chunks that you are breaking to get stuff. from my understanding when loading a game. the game will take account of the outcrops and "shuffle" them. i personally have not experienced this with the outcrops. some people said they have seen them regenerate or reappear in old places i have not seen this. its possible that leviathans may get "shuffled" too. but like leviathans the outcrops are not supposed to respawn either.
Normal leviathans in the game do not respawn, the ones off the edge of the map are temporary and they spawn any time you're in the area, killing them is useless unless there's an achievement for it.
It takes about 200 hits from a thermal knife to kill any of the hostile leviathans. If you're quick enough with the stasis rifle and the right mouse click you can do it in one ultra-high capacity O2 tank.
(i agree, normal leviathans dont respawn, the edge ones spawn every time u go there so that u dont leave the map)
Ah, this makes sense. That would explain a few of the strange things I’ve seen. I noticed world rendering seems to also be a huge issue. I’m on console, I haven’t played on steam. I’ve got about 35 hours, so it isn’t much. This is my first play through of the game. In any case, that would explain why (even though Leviathans aren’t supposed to respawn, per your post) the Juvenile is back again. I first heard his screams, then saw his ghastly snake body after I loaded back in and cried lmao. I’m kinda glad though. Keeps things spicy, but contained area + Ghost Leviathan + Cyclops = Big worry time. I’d rather him have stayed gone in the long run.
