No, the game does not support mods. Not officially.
All mods exist thanks to the nature of Unity and the C# code being fairly easy to decompile and later hack at run time.
Mods for this game are enabled through exploiting arbitrary code injections and not through any official modding framework.
There can be no Steam Workshop when the devs have to assume the liability of every player running someone else's arbitrary code that they have no control over.
So I wouldn't hold your breath on Workshop being enabled at all.
i am not sure what it is you are saying here. there are games that have mods on steam workshop as well as places like nexus
Yes, some games have mods on both places like Nexus as well as Steam Workshop. These are games like Skyrim where the game itself has official mod support.
For these games, the devs carefully control what mods can and can't do so as to make sure nothing improper is done on the player's PC.
But Subnautica was never designed with mod support in mind.
Everything to do with mods for Subnautica was entirely driven by modders, including the mod loader itself.
There was never a plan to have official mod support for the game.
And enabling Steam Workshop would mean enabling official mod support, as in being able to use mods without installing a third party mod loader.
Mods for Subnautica are pure code.
And the devs can't guarantee that these mods will ever be safe.
Nexus does what they can by scanning the files for know viruses, but you're always taking a risk with these mods.
Please don't confuse "the game can be modded" with "the developers intended the game to be modded".
And without official mod support, Steam Workshop integration can never happen.
Again, Subnautica mods are a hack. An exploit of the code such that we can get the game to run the code written by modders while running the game's normal code.
