Enable console :
To activate it you need to press F3 and you'll see a checkbox ticked in the top left saying: "Disable Console". Press F8 to get a mouse cursor and uncheck the box to activate the console. Once the console is enabled, press Enter, ~, Ø or Ö, depending on the keyboard, and type one of the commands.

These two pages are filled with ways you can change the style of your play, I recommend you *Temporarily* enable nocost & fastbuild and build a scanner room as well as 3 upgrades for range and 1 for speed.
Then set the scanner room to locate reaper leviathans. If you can't find the reaper leviathan on the scanner selection there isn't one in range.
FINALLY. You'll need the HUD upgrade; The Scanner Room HUD Chip is a crafted piece of Equipment made using the Fabricator inside the Scanner Room. It is used to display Raw Materials or Harvesting Nodes located by the scanner room on the HUD.
IF this isn't drastic enough you can type "day" to make it daytime instantly, same for "night".
That can help you have the lighting conditions you want.
If you are straight up unable to play because the unknown terrifies you type FOG
Doing so will remove the water from your view and you can see perfectly in the distance. SO you could spot a reaper levithan from 600meters away in absolute darkness.
Granted this method is visually unappealing on account of the way the game cheats on rendering distant objects. Normally you wouldn't be able to see that far but with enabled you can see gaping holes of not-textures. Anyways goodluck bud.
