When to build a base?
I got this game free from Humble (I think) and I'm loving it, I love buildy sandbox types, but I'm running out of storage and having 6 of those floating beer coolers below the lifepod full of odds and ends and it is inconvenient as hell having to sift through them to find stuff.

Should I set out and try to make some kind of base to store stuff or will I get instructed to build one at some point? So far I've found 3 or 4 lifepods, been sent to two islands and I just saw a rescue ship get blown to bits by what looks like Halo technology.

Also, I did build a moonpool somewhere within 800m but now can't find it so I'm assuming bases don't show on the map?

Dude, I'm surprised you went that long without making a base. Whatever's most convenient to you, Currently my only impasse in the game is "dear god not the reapers"

You should honestly build a base the moment you can make a habitat builder tool. It doesn't need to be anything special to begin with; literally just a couple hallways with some lockers in it and a solar panel is enough. Also make a beacon and place it wherever your bases are so you can find them again.

Once you've got more resources and tech unlocked, you can always deconstruct it all and build a real base.

There's no reason to have 6 lunch boxes. Your first day or two is typically getting some food together, and crafting some basic gear. The next day, you can search a nearby wreckage to get a Sea Glider. Then, recipes for a Gravity Ball and Beacon the same day or next. Also go to the Pod 3 distress call. Spend the next day on a mining expedition. Specifically, at least two Silver.

Once you get two Silver, you can craft that construction tool. By day 5 or 6, use the construction tool to build three parts to a storage shed near your pod base:

1 Tube
1 Solar Panel
1 Hatch

You can fit more than four shelves in there. I never needed more than two or three.

Here is an image of the starting Escape Pod with a storage shed below:

If you ignore the mobile bay and the car, that's all you basically need. Then your main base can be constructed later on. But there are a few things I try to get done first.

Pod 17.
Major crash Site just beyond Pod 17.
Craft some new stuff, including a car.
Do the Aurora.

Then, do the mission to find the pod that leads to a place where you can get lots of recipes for important building structures. Including a Multipurpose Room and Gardening Beds. You can also pick up recipes for a garage.

As soon as you can craft base builder tool, create one basic storage under your lifepod (one tube, one hatch, lots of locker) to expand your storage capacity.

I make a 'main' base after getting mobile vehicle bay/seamoth/moonbeam/multipurpose room.

When you're still looking for a good base spot, or just starting out in a game of this, I recomend building a "shed" below the lifepod that can be used for storage as well as anything else you might want while looking for a good place for said base.

Example below. By building it below the lifepod it means you can use that for the fabricator and by putting the door on the top means you have more space inside to put things on or near the walls.

Build a base as soon as you get the resources to do so. Build tool = Home/storage. Home = Energy. Energy = moar battery charge.

DO NOT TRASSPASS ON FORTRESS OSSOLOT ALPHA!!!
