How does the bioreactor work?

I'm planning on building a small habitat down by the mushroom forests (my first habitat away from the safe shallows.
I need something other then solar panels.
I understand your can get up to 500 energy in one bioreactor.
But does it use power when you're not using it.

If I fill it up to 500. I go somewhere. I'm not running any machines etc. Just leave it and come back an hour later. Will I come back to a powerless habitat with no oxygen?

When you go, just put in some things. if you come back, it won't be powerless.

Step 1.) Construct bioreactor
Step 2.) Construct indoor growbed
Step 3.) Feed bioreactor with a limitless source of fuel in the form of marblemelons, chinese potatos, or whatever else you grow...

Free, unlimited energy. Grow food to feed the reactor to power the lights to grow food. Physics go to hell

I would suggest augmenting its output with a thermal reactor as well.

Feed it fish. Eventually you'll also unlock an alien containment (basically a giant fishtank) where fish will reproduce.
