Can't run Epic Games version without Epic Launcher anymore.
I grabbed the game for free a few days ago. Yesterday I could play it just fine running the exe directly (no need to run it through Epic Launcher). However, it doesn't seem to work anymore. When I try to launch it, it shows the app icon on the task bar for a few seconds and then dissapears. It doesn't even show the game window, it crashes at startup. It only works when running it through Epic Launcher.

The reason I need to run it from the EXE is that I need Steam Controller Support to make it recognize my generic usb controller correctly. It doesn't work when I try to run the exe as a non-steam game. It sucks because I play it on VR, so using a controller is pretty much mandatory.

I start a discussion here because Epic Launcher doesn't seem to have a proper community forum or anything like that yet.

So the DRM free version was leaked by accident, and now they've "fixed" it. lol
I don't like the Epic Launcher either, it still needs a lot of improvements. Thankfully I always turn-off auto updates when possible.

I was going to start a thread like this. If you create a shortcut from the game screen in the epic launcher it starts the game instantly. If you could add a shortcut rather than exe. (it seems it must be an exe. to add) it would work fine. Anyone know if that’s possible?

I figured it out!

- create a shortcut from the game screen in the epic launcher
- add the game’s exe. to steam via the usual method
- go to PROPERTIES
- scroll down to CHANGE
- the file select screen appears
- you can drop down the file type menu
- select ALL FILES
- add the epic launcher generated shortcut

Hope that helps folks that like Steam for their main game library.

It launches, but still says that it failed to, the Steam Overlay still doesn't work.

I just figured out how to do this by myself:

- create a shortcut for the game in the epic launcher if you don't have one already
- right-click the shortcut -> select the "Web Document" tab -> copy the URL (in my case: com.epicgames.launcher://apps/Jaguar?action=launch&silent=true)
- open steam
- click "Games" -> "Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library..."
- click "BROWSE..."
- search the exe (in my case: D:\Games\Epic Games\Subnautica\Subnautica.exe)
- click "ADD SELECTED PROGRAMS"
- now right click Subnautica in your Steam library -> select Properties
- in the TARGET field remove the entry and add the URL you copied before instead with "" around it (in my case: "com.epicgames.launcher://apps/Jaguar?action=launch&silent=true")
- click CLOSE and launch the game from Steam

You should probably go to the Subnautica's Community Hub on Epic Store for such issues, friend.

It doesn't crash for me with that method and I wasn't concerned with Steam overlay. I just wanted to access it through my Steam library and not have to start another client. It works just fine for me. I also use an XBONE controller with no issue.

Quick fix: Uninstall the crapware called ''Epic Games Store'' , Seriously though, this is not Epic's support forum, why you even... OH... RIGHT...You don't even have a forum :steammocking:

That's the point. I posted here hoping a dev would clarify my issue, but since none of them replied, I assume the first comment is right: a DRM-free version got leaked, and it was "fixed" in the last update. That's a shame, dev's haven't learnt yet that DRM exists only to annoy legit customers.

Go to reddit, or some other Subnautica forum instead. This is for the steam version. Or go to Epic's forum...ohhh they said they wouldn't add one. What a shame!

Epic is such a POS and I like their old games like UT99 (over quake, etc.). Not only are they being greedy and exposing people to Android malware by skipping the Play Store(fees), now they undercut Steam with lower fees and basically pushing their customers to use Steams forums because they think forums are supposedly toxic, which they are, but they can also be helpful. Steam can actually force Devs to look at complains, etc..On reddit or devs forums they don't really have to.
I actually decided to buy Subnautica on Steam as soon as I can. I'll use Epic's platform to see if I like a certain free game, then support it by buying it on Steam or other platform.

Epic's game platform is still heavily in it's infancy and is bound to have tons of issues. I'd say stick to Steam for another year or so till they iron out some bugs. I don't plan on leaving anytime soon as I just don't like epic games. I feel the same about them as I feel about battlenet, uplay, origin and many other launchers newer to the market. They're all massive let downs and jokes that try to be something they aren't. Once a satisfying replacement comes along I'd probably jump ship but so far I haven't seen a need to.
