Ghost Leviathan in Safe Shallows?
I'm not sure if this is a some kind of a bug or not, but while I was seamothing around the map looking for the Eye Stalk to complete the quest, I noticed the freaking Ghost Leviathan in the Kelp Forest (!), chasing me the doorstep of my base in Safe Shallows! For whatever reason, an Ampeel also made it there... just to be tore apart by this Ghost Leviathan.

Any idea what to do? Will he eventually de-spawn or swim away?

lol that's hilarious and definitely a bug. Use the status rifle to stun him then knife him while he's stunned, repeat until dead he will not respawn back in this area.

Just like Reapers they can follow you around. I've had to get rid of two Reapers that have made their way to the safe shallows so far.

It'll take some doing, but there are two ways to get rid of it..

First, make three armor modules, get in your prawn, grapple it in the face, and drill away, drop off when you get low, repair..rinse and repeat until it's dead.

The second is to take your stasis rifle..use it..and knife it like a crazy person until it's dead..just make sure to bring a bunch of batteries..it'll take like 5 minutes of knifing.

afraid not. that ghost leviathan will remain there until you find a way of get rid of it, if you can get back in your seamoth and lure it away in the same manner you lured it to your base, find cave with an additional exit to keep it from chasing you and if you get far enough away you will be fine.

The only other method that might work is a PRAWN with a drill arm and a grapple arm and physically dealing with it.

Can't you just use a console command to despawn it? I think the command is instagib

instagib allows anything to die with 1 point of damage, including yourself.
Type instagib, hit ghostly with knife, type instagib again to turn it off. Save game reload game. All is well.

as a side note on your quest, each portal in that facility has one of the things you need nearby

Forget the drill... the regular punch does more damage than the drill.

I'm waiting for the Grand Reef's Ghost Leviathan to show up in the Safe Shallows. It must've been stuck in a wall, all I could hear was its shriek when it charges at you, then suddenly it sped past me.
Destination: Safe Shallows. Or the next wall.

But the punch needs to charge while the drill can be kept "on".

That's why I prefer the drill. Less chance of missing and having to wait while being slung around and trying to get close enough to it's head to attack again.

I experienced the same thing you did, except it phased through a mountain near the Kelp Forest. I think it got under the map and went to the Kelp Forest somehow.

They can chase you across the map as long as you stay close enough to them. I've had a couple in the safe shallows before and had to end up killing them. :(

That's one of the Ghost Leviathans from either the Grand Reef or Northern Blood Kelp Forest. Like many large fauna, they can head to the center of the map (in the safe shallows) if they sustain damage or end up far enough out of their spawn zone. This is why you'll often see Ampeels and Bone Sharks near the starting Lifepod too.

This tends to happen a lot when players use the grapple/drill method to try to deal damage to leviathans, but there are other causes. Not really a bug as the game is intentionally designed this way.

As for "how to get them to leave," you have to kill them; they won't leave that zone on their own. The safe shallows makes it very easy to kill them instantly with a habitat builder. Simply stasis them, then build a mutipurpose room or I-tube over their head. They'll immediately vaporize when the structure comes in and will be dead for good.
