For comparison - we have ghost leviathans in the dead zone. Dead zone is no-gameplay zone. The ghost leviathans exist there to ward off the players who go in there and put them back into "the game".
Reapers have somewhat similiar role, but to a lesser extent. You dont usually go where reapers live because it means issues. But there MIGHT be some good loot in there. So you have to weight your risk-reward options and decide for yourself weather you prefer to just leave it be or go in.
Reapers also become less of an issue later in the game.
To have an easier time surviving going into their territory i recommend:
- reinforced suit
- seamoth
- seamoth hull plate module (maybe two)
- seamoth electro-fence module
- stasis rifle
Reapers do not damage seamoth directly (unlike ghost leviathans). They have to grab it first.
That's what electro-defense counter acts. Activate it as soon as reaper grabs you and he WILL let go.
If you need to come out and grab something - use stasis rifle on the head. Small shot first then fully-charged one. You can also create safe-zones by shooting the environment.
Or you can just brute force them with either PRAWN or Cyclops.
I recommend putting a decoy and shield modules to have an easier time with them.
They also wont attack the Cyclops if you are standing still and dont have lights / sonar on.
You might feel like you don't necessarily need them, but they have several advantages:
- They are slightly faster than swimming (although I'm not sure if they're faster than the seaglide); in any case, you'll have to move around a lot, a 5 minutes swim is pretty tedious if all you do is press the forward key.
- You don't need to worry about oxygen in vehicles.
- With one exception, creatures can't attack you directly while you're in a vehicle.
- Vehicles give you additional mobile storage, as well as attack and defense systems, if you want.
- The map also goes 1.3 km into the depth or so. You won't have enough oxygen to dive that far and back without vehicles.
- Vehicles are fun anyway, regardless of whether you need them or not. ;)
If you really wanne be done with them all, just kill em. It's not that hard, they can die and wont respawn. I've killed all of them in my game and here's how:
1) Get the Ultra High Capacity O2-tank.
2) Get the Thermoblade.
3) Get the Stasis Rifle.
4) Move into Reaper teritory and park you Seamoth away from the reaper at a safe location.
5) Use the Seaglide to get close to the Reaper and let it notice you.
6) While its comming straight for you charge and release the stasis rifle. It's not hard to hit at all if it's comming for you and you don't have to fully charge the Stasis Rifle the first time. Just keep it in one place, to then hit it with a full stasis field.
7) Hit the lower body of the Reaper (right below the head) inside the stasis field for about 50 times with the Thermoblade (you will see yellow blood when you are hitting it). Refresh the stasis field every 10sec or so. A fully charged stasis field takes forever to disappear.
8) If you need air then leave the Reaper in stasis and use the Seaglide to get back to your Seamoth or the Surface. Don't waste time and get back to the Reaper ASAP.
9) After about 50 hits the Reaper will die, turn upside down and drop down into the rocks. You can then scan it and after you left the scene and return to that location, the reaper will have de-spawned and your problems will be gone.
It's all about facing your fears head on! If it helps remove your headphones and play silent or put up some awesome rock music and beat that Reapers behind!! :) Good Hunting!
The one near the gap in the aurora was my first encounter with one and it nearly ate me as I just managed to dodge to the side and saw it glide past me screaming. God that scared me.
There is also another 2 fixed spots for Reapers just underneath the engines of the aurora and near the alien anti ship gun (other side to the beach). The one near that island is notorious for eating people through the walls when they are exploring caves under the water line.
You stab mostly non sentient life forms with a sharp bleeding object millions of times.
Non violent everybody! Best joke (sarcasm option)
Huh. I've been to and from the Aurora several times with my Seamoth, even hung around the crash zone on te side of the Aurora closest to the Lifepod looking for ore deposits. I use the above-water entrance where the Aurora's bow used to be to get in. I've never once encountered a Reaper in those waters. Always considered those waters safe. Not sure about the far side of the Aurora though, never been there.
I DO believe I briefly encountered a Reaper the other day while on my way back from the Mountains Wreck. I never saw it, just a loud crash of something attacking my Cyclops and then I glimpsed a blip fleeing from my stern on the radar. It seems to have taken one swipe at my Cyclops and then left again. Weird.

If the game was more polished, that biter would have still been alive today.
