If your main home is your lifepod, where have you been keeping all your materials? Waterproof lockers are small, suck, and probe to a history of bugs (Even for launch, I've seen people reporting them somehow getting stuck to the ceiling of the inside of their lifepod).
So any base building project, you need the raw materials first. And for something as far away as the islands from your lifepod. You're gonna want some form of vehichle at minimum to make carting materials back and forth easier, until you can at least get a base powered and with it's own fabricator.
Honestly your first step should be some hallways (or MP rooms if you have those unlocked) stuffed full of lockers by your lifepod. Then you branch out from there. (trying to live out of a cyclops with no bases in the early game is dumb, with no way to recharge it but to craft more power cells. Unless you're sequence breaking to skip straight to thermals and infinite ions).
