But it's still very infrequent for me in my lazy no rush tourist take on launch, rather than rushnig through like my piles of EA playthrough.
As in my recent save, I'm also just doing my own thing so I have not touched the gun which informs you that you are infected, or met the trigger that makes your hands visually infected. So maybe that screws with the logic of how often they spawn.
Have you checked off the plot triggers that make it obvious you are infected yet? Maybe the frequency of infected wildlife goes up alongside that. The virus has always been a very finicky thing.
I have not even seen the peepers with the cure trail, and I've swam past one of those peeper vents a few times too in my travels.
In any case it worked; I threw an infected eyeye into an alien containment tank with a bunch of eels and crabsquids and they became infected. Added some creepvine for the eerie yellow light and now it looks amazing. I'm really happy with the effect :D
