Because it's all about visuals making the base look cool and the walls have no cool animations like opening and closing the bulkheads. If there are no bulkheads in my base, I feel that something is missing as it doesn't look like a proper underwater base if there are no bulkhead doors whatsoever.
Oh God, that sounds awful! I mean if they closed automatically if there was a leak in the base, fine, but that's just horrifying to think about!
1) Aesthetics - I have a *LOT* of windows in my base.
2) I'm lazy and there's a kelp forest on my doorstep. Rubber is far easier to get than lithium
3) I like putting a lot of care and effort into dividing my base into compartments (even if I then leave the doors open because, again, I'm lazy xD
Bear in mind, you're talking to someone who has wasted an afternoon hoovering up as much copper as I could find in order to have signs on each room, and signposts on each junction. Y'know, in case I get visitors OhGodGetMeOffThisPlanet
