the gas ones do damage but the leviathans just swim through the small "poisoncloud" and nom you anyways..
as david said. stasis rifle
Waste of mats IMHO. The Seamoths defence field is 100 times better than either torp and if your in the P.R.A.W.N. just hit them with the drill.
There is a "third" kind of torpedo - Crashfish. I've compiled a guide on the subject of "Crashfish" torpedoes.
Basically, for weapon purposes, Crashfish are the best kind of Torpedo, only you need a propulsion cannon instead of a torpedo launcher. Gas Torpedos are only ideal if you can keep the critters in place with a Stasis Rifle. Otherwise, Vortex would be better.
That being said, the Crashfish "Torpedoes" are highly effective - Medium-sized predators (River Prowlers and Bone Sharks are just two of the creatures I've tested the Crashfish on) will die in two hits. Crab Squids are dead after getting hit by four Crashfish. There's a reason the Devs made Crashfish take up four slots now instead of the one that they used to.
Seamoth's PDS is a one time build that will pretty much last forever and the PRAWN's arm modifications will send everything running.
I hope torpedoes get a huge overhaul in a near future so they're actually worth using. Together with the creature decoy.
Ooooh....i forgot! *grabs tons of crashfish eggs and throws them in the AC)
Torpedoes now have a homing ability so that is a step in the right direction. We no longer need to worry about whether or not it will hit and can now start thinking about which is the right torpedo to use.
They are easy kill.
