Which torpedoes are best to deter leviathans?
Gas or vortex? Or are there other different types of torpedoes I just haven't discovered yet?

Vortex as the gas ones don't seem effective, but you need to very good at aiming, or if your trying to escape, a stasis rifle is the best

when it comes to torpedos: vortex
the gas ones do damage but the leviathans just swim through the small "poisoncloud" and nom you anyways..
as david said. stasis rifle

Honestly the torps are so lack luster I don't even use them.
Waste of mats IMHO. The Seamoths defence field is 100 times better than either torp and if your in the P.R.A.W.N. just hit them with the drill.

There is a "third" kind of torpedo - Crashfish. I've compiled a guide on the subject of "Crashfish" torpedoes.

Basically, for weapon purposes, Crashfish are the best kind of Torpedo, only you need a propulsion cannon instead of a torpedo launcher. Gas Torpedos are only ideal if you can keep the critters in place with a Stasis Rifle. Otherwise, Vortex would be better.

That being said, the Crashfish "Torpedoes" are highly effective - Medium-sized predators (River Prowlers and Bone Sharks are just two of the creatures I've tested the Crashfish on) will die in two hits. Crab Squids are dead after getting hit by four Crashfish. There's a reason the Devs made Crashfish take up four slots now instead of the one that they used to.

The Seamoth Perimeter Defense module works best for Reapers. All you need to do is use it only once as soon as the Reaper grabs you and it wil let go. It is just about all I use when I encounter a Reaper.

charging up the seamoth defence weapon will give a bigger shock, might keep it away for longer, but it uses up a lot of power of your fully charge it.

That is why I use it alongside the Solar Charger module. You can use the SPD during the day and then your power charges back up.

Torpedoes seriously feels like a gimmick thing at the moment..

Seamoth's PDS is a one time build that will pretty much last forever and the PRAWN's arm modifications will send everything running.

I hope torpedoes get a huge overhaul in a near future so they're actually worth using. Together with the creature decoy.

Torpedoes now have a homing ability so that is a step in the right direction. We no longer need to worry about whether or not it will hit and can now start thinking about which is the right torpedo to use.

Jump into prawn then exit and shoot the prawn with stasis rifle. Then jump back in prawn and go above the reaper or whatever and shoot the grappling hook into the neck of it, next is a fun ride on top of the poor thing where you actually walk on the head and back of it and drill it's brain out.

They are easy kill.
