Worst case scenario, drop a sample of what you're looking for in the water then scan for it.
You run a circle by looking at the distance meter on the camera and constantly turning in to keep the distance relatively constant (350m for me). At the same time, monitor the compass to ensure you travel all 360 degrees. Takes three or four minutes for a complete circle.
Once done, it's good for searching all items and switching the selections during your game session. However, you lose it when you exit the game and have to rerun the circle if you want to use the scanner after a restart.
