What would be the point in planting mushrooms near your base?
There was a discussion a while back that touched on how to gather seeds for deep mushrooms or acid muchrooms.
But what's the point in doing so? If you take seeds back to your base they take up just as much room in your inventory as the plant itself.
If you plant it in an outdoor box, you have to wait for the seed to grow, then when you harvest it you get one plant and it's gone.
You could simply have brought back a plant and stuck it in a locker till you needed it for the same return without the bother of the outdoor planter box.

Am I missing something here?

Yes, you get 4 seeds out of one shroom.
So, for the recipy for example where you need 3 shrooms and 1 salt you harvest 3 shrooms and hit the fourth with the knife. Then you got 3 shrooms and 4 seeds and can "replant" them all without any loss.

Alright, thanks. I hadn't noticed that you get multiple seeds. I'll try what you suggested.

One plant gives four seeds, pick up at least one plant, then when back to base replant it/them, harvest seeds.
Plant seeds, wait for them to grow, then if needed plant more seeds.
So long as you always leave at least one for more seeds to replant, you never need for them ever again.

That's why.

All plants give off more seeds when you break them with your knife. That's how you build your own farm of resources without having to travel everywhere for materials. You can build farms for lubricant/rubber and kelp, blood oil, acid and deep mushrooms, gel sacks as well as indoor plants like the bulbo tree, chinese potato, melons and lantern tree.

Also huge warning here................

If you have a planter full of deep mushrooms DO NOT! Knife them in the planter, pick a couple and swim away a little to drop them, then cut them up.

I learned the hard way on hardcore that chain reaction mushroom acid baths are a bad thing.

That's odd. In another post I saw that you don't take damage if you cut them in a planter. I tried it myself and went from 1 deep shroom to an entire planter of them in a few cycles.
I'm only playing survival so I wonder if that makes a difference.

I've got a garden with both types of mushrooms, blood kelp, and gel sacks. I'll probably go get some kelp next and few membrane trees for light.

Or put the planter a distance away from anything that could be damaged. Read that warning in another thread just before I planted mine! lol

Also, I've never had a chain reaction. Mine are planted side by side in a bed, and one has never made another explode. Maybe I'm lucky? lol

My garden is on a foundation right next to my base. If I do get a chain reaction it'll be interesting.

;^)

It used to be that knifing shrooms in your own planters would make acid which could destroy the other shrooms (and any other plants for that matter) next to them, and so on in a reaction.

At some point in the past they seem to have patched this out, thankfully. Though it can still happen with the wild ones.

How can you do garden with Blood kelp and Gel sack ? im kinda intrested of knowing this ! Oh and where do you get those two ?

I don't really know my way around the map well enough to describe how to find blood kelp. I put a beacon there after I found it by accident. It's in deeper water though. (250m or so)
Once you do find it, instead of using the blood oil to make benzine or whatever it is, build an outdoor planter and put the oil in there. A blood kelp plant will grow and you can harvest blood oil from that.
For gel sacks, just put one in the planter then cut it with your knife. This will get you seeds and you'll get 3 from each gel sack. Put those in the planter and each one will grow a new gel sack.
For mushrooms and gel sacks, you don't need to start with a seed. Just put the plant in the planter and cut it to get seeds.
Blood oil contains a seed and creepvine seeds can be planted instead of made into lubricant.

If you don't already have the BP for the outdoor planter, you can find it on the floating island and probably a bunch of other locations.

You plant their seeds. You can find gel sacs near the bottom on a section of the big tree in the mushroom forest, probably easist way. Blood kelp, you just have to go deep enough.

Blood kelp and gel sacs in my "garden"

For blood kelp plant a spore. For the gel sack just either transplant it or plant its seeds.

Probably the easiest way to find locations on most of the items in the game would be to do a search on Youtube. There's many videos where they start from the surface using the Aurora as a reference point and you can see the surrounding terrain so you know when you're getting close.
Also, carry a few beacons so when you accidently discover something new, you can drop a beacon to go back later.
It's also worth picking at least one of each new type of plant as that will often unlock a new recipe for the fabricator.

Kelp are the tall green things in the background of my pic above. Blood kelp is the tree like thing with the blood spores at the base in the gardent plot outside the window in my pic. They are whitish, not green.
