Still can't find Nickel Ore?
Ok, I've checked other people's forum posts and the wiki multiple times but I still can't seem to find nickel ore. I'm in the Lost River and I've tried...

  • Looking in the river itself with a prawn suit (no ore or even large resource deposits)
  • Buidling a scanner room with full range upgrades and adequate power (It can't find any either.) (maybe I need to move this?)
  • Just driving the seamoth (none laying around on the surface of the lost river)

I've spent over an hour while checking every single area at this point. I've found crystalline sulfer too but absolutely no nickel whatsoever. There's multiple things I'm working on right now and I can't progress in any of them without nickel. Any ideas?

I think I know the guide you are referring to. It was used way back at the end of 2016 (I think) when we were having staggering issues with framerate. The only way to do that was to delete all of the batch files in the Cellscache folder. There was an extra step that involved recording the batch files your base(s) were in but that is no longer necessary.

Basically, if you have Windows 8, 8.1 or Windows 10, go here:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Subnautica'SNAppData\SavedGames\

You will see one or more folders named "slot" followed by four digits. These are your saved game folders. Find the folder with your current saved game data in it (you can tell by looking at the "screenshot" JPG file within that folder at the very bottom), open it, and then open the folder named "CellsCache." Delete all of the files in there. You can also delete all of the files just outside the CellsCache folder with the name "batch-objects-X-X-X" (X will be a two-digit number) but don't delete the other four files at the bottom of the folder.

That should reset everything in the game worlf besides your base(s), including resources. If you absolutely cannot find any nickel ore, do this trick and you might find it the next time you look.

Nickel ore has the tendency to dislodge itself from cave walls and cave floors. You might just need to watch for something round-ish rolling away somewhere. It is definately in the Lost River, though.

The area before and around the shiny egg tree before lava zone

Some on walls and lot in the green poison. It's everywhere

There's a plentiful and easy supply of in in the cave connecting the Lost River and Deep Grand Reef biome. The Cove Tree is another safe area to look.

I can't really go in the cove tree area because it's just over 900m and the prawn suit can't go that far, but maybe I could give it a shot, just swimming or something, I'll have to see. (Before you ask, can't upgrade the prawn suit max depth without nickel :/ ) Will update this post when I try it, thanks.

I'd have to swim in there without any machine but if I'm desperate I'll try it, thanks.

You can always plant some brain corals down there and do the search without a vehicle hehe

Update, no nickel in the blue river of the cove tree cave, and none lying around. Now that I think about it, are there supposed to be ghostrays here too? Because there aren't any, maybe there's just no entities spawning...?

Yea you got a problem if no ghost rays in the blue tree cove.

Not sure but there was this guide on how to purge a save's memory but keep all you stuff, couldn't find it last time I looked for it.

Will definitely check for that, thank you.

Also nickel can be found as ore deposits wrapped in those roots in one of the green brine rooms with a juveline ghost. They just look like rocks

Ok, at least I know I'm not crazy, I'll look around for that guide. Thank you!

Will try and check for that.

The large room in Lost River with the massive fossilized rib cages contains dozens of nickel deposits, both small, that can be picked by hand, and large, requiring the Prawn Suit and drill arm. It is at a depth of around 700m so you are good with the upgraded Seamoth. Go to the rib cage with the thermal vent and place a scanner room with a thermal generator. Should give you enough nickel to build all game upgrades.
