Scanner room and time capsules

Can a scanner room scan for time capsules?
How are time capsules distributed once released?
Does a time casule get placed multiple times?

Scanner room only scans for resources (as far as i know)

Once a time capsules is created and launched at the end of the game its send to https://subnautica.unknownworlds.com/time-capsules once enough upvotes are made it goes to the devs Servers where a final decison is made. then its placed randomly in the world when a new game is started.

there are upto 40 capsules per save, you will most likely never find the same one twice in a single save.

That's interesting. So a time capsule needs to be voted and approved by a developer? Does this mean, the list of time capsules actually needs to be voted and emptied?

I think that I made a mistake. I observed the time capsule fabricator and had no items on me. Do you think, there was an empty time capsule created? I also got the achievement for time capsules but I didn't intentionally leave any time capsule so far..

If you didn't select to launch the capsule at the end of the game it wont get submitted to the voting system, its a way for people to finish the game without having to create a detailed capsule each time, i do it, i just dump anything in and just put a letter in each box to fulfil the needs, but don't launch it so i can finish the game.

Actually you CAN get multiple instances of the same time capsule quite easily in a single playthrough. I've collected 40 in one of my playthroughs and found several duplicates. There was at least one that was duplicated 3 times (identified based on the rather... strange mix of items it contained).

You will only find them where wrecks and salvage can be found, so you don't have to worry about time capsules in deep caves and such.

There is a standard set of time capsules released with the game, and more incoming constantly.

And yes you can actually launch a time capsule with no items. Just leave a message at the very least.

Up to FOURTY?? Man, I have some hunting to do. I only found one so far.

Since the original post was made, a mod has been released that allows scanner rooms to find time capsules. There is another mod that alerts you when one is 50 meters away.

Good luck! Easiest place to find 1-2 is near Lifepod 19, in the cave system of the Sparse Reef. Beyond that, the most common biomes to find them are in the Dunes and Crash Zone.

I actually don't see them anymore, might have been removed recently (maybe an update broke them).

Also, we got slightly more info from the devs since this topic was first made and there are not EXACTLY 40 capsules, only some amount relatively close. So your game might only have 38, or it could have 43. My personal high is 45, and note that dupes do not show up twice on the list.

What I mean is, you can find dupes, but they'll only show up once on the list. This is mainly for people who are trying to track how many they've found.
