My 2nd base I made near the Mountains, that island with the alien structure, it has a nice convenience, namely the portal that leads to the other island, and deeper into the world, you'll unlock those a bit later, if you haven't already, and the various plants that are a real boon for that whole "staying alive" thing.
Generally, look for good spots that have:
- Good general resources (or easy route to resources, one of my bases was in the grassy plateau, the place with the red grass, and it was based next to a ravine that lead down deeper into the world that had plenty of Quartz, Shale rocks and rubies)
- Generally harmless, building my base near that Mountain has me facing those teeth things that look like green shlongs, and a leviathan every now and again, but, generally speaking, other than leviathans, the monsters like Stalkers and the like aren't any real threat, I can see them from my windows but they barely ever attack.
Google the Subnautica Map and maybe check out the general biomes, so to speak, no biome is bad to set up in, but I prefer the Mountain, the Floating Island, Grassy Plateau or any other spot that has close access deeper into the world.I'll edit this if anything else pops into my literally eroded head.
