Read pda informations. Especially allien data and stuff about survivors. But its good idea to read everything.
Some other survivors lifepods are near important areas....so find them all when it comes to radio and never forgot to do proper exploring of nearby area.
When you are familiar with those areas and entries at your PDA, you should have no trouble to find out what to do next.
Yeah... I would've had no idea what to do if I hadn't read a full step by step storyline spoiler on the wiki.
If you'er not sure what to do, go hit all the crashed pods you know the locations of. If there are some with only approximate locations, try to find those. What's the last thing you've done?
Your mission is to survive, but arent you curious how far you can go and what you can see ? Try it out and maybe events will unfold.
Most importantly, know that you can gather, scan, cut with a knife most objects in game, do that because you might find a new recipe (as stated by PDA, blueprints adapt to your surroundings, but system must know what your surroundings are).
Also you are able to go inside the big ship wrecks (something i thought was just nice art). With tools you can cut open doors later or fix broken doors to open them.
my biggest issue with the game is that the developers removed the pings that guide you to the next part of the main story.
