Maybe they got the disease from you?
Now, this works differently if done backwards. If you grab a bunch of fish from alien containment and release them into the environment instead, each of t hem has a 'chance' of being an infected fish upon release.
To avoid accidental infections, I put the fish in my hotbar first. If it looks infected in my hand, I toss it in the bin and look at the next fish.
