How do I get things from cargo boxes?

I see stuff in cargo boxes, and it even tells me something is there, but it won't let me pick the item inside up. Do I have to build a tool or something first to pick up things in boxes? (these are already open boxes, not "sealed" ones.

You scan it with the scanner.

A scanner should be one of the first things you craft. The scanner is what opens up all the cool tech. There are fragments of tech lying around almost everywhere, especially in cargo boxes and wrecks. You use the scanner to scan the fragments, and when you've scanned enough you unlock the blueprint for that item and can now craft it.
