There is also a leviathan in the Grand Reef, as well as Blood Kelp, but they aren't reapers.
Sound is the most important thing when detecting a reaper, as you hear them long before you see them, but for you, I think these wouldbe the best options. And of course, keep a sharp eye out when you are in those areas.
If you are unsure about what biome you are in, you can hit f1 to check.
Now I have to ask, and I hope this isn't rude, but how is the experience of Subnautica without Audio? Are you still finding yourself unnerved, and able to immerse yourself in the game?
You should maybe do the same. Just pick up what you need then quickly look around and then leave.
I just checked, and I can confirm this. The scanner ( Make sure you have 3 range and 1 speed ) In the area that has reapers will infact scan reapers. Just get the HUD chip as stated above.
Also it seems it's only Reapers and Reefbacks.
Edit: I guess I hit my post limit. Scanner base range is low, it increases by 50m for each upgrade, so an extra 150m. Plenty or range for you to work in the area with relative safely. I can't reply anymore. gg
Yeah I am able to have fun with the game. I am mostly looking for new material at this point. Also looking for a way down to lava level. I have prawn/cyclop/seamoth and they can go down to 700 to 900 meter. But I have not found any area more deeper than 500 meter at the moment. I believe I found a way into lost river but a ghost leviathan chased me out...
Yes I do have a scanner room but I only have one at mountain currently but I could add more in other location. I didn't build many becaus the scanner's room range seems limited?
I mostly use visual clue like darkening green hue of the kelp forest and subtle darkening as you go deeper into biome blood kelp area with octoblob thing. There are usually enough to navigate by.
After reading your story, I really would love to see the devs add subtitles for 'Danger' audio cues, maybe with a little directional arror glowing in red to give a rough indication of location around you.
So impressed by your bravery!
Only other thing that I can add from killing one recently, is that even if he grabs you in your Prawn (punch his stoopid face), then you're only going to take about a quarter damage on the suit before he lets you go and usually retreats. You can take four to five "mouth fights" before your Prawn will go POP!
Finally, try taking some Oculus fish with you (you can find them in the Jelly Shroom Caves), keep them on your hotbar. Not 100% sure if it still works, but it used to be that if you were holding an Oculus fish, when the Reaper bit your character, he would eat the Oculus and not hurt you. Similar to feeding Stalkers using Peepers.

The main issue with Reapers is they prefer to attack from behind so if you can't hear them they're likely to surprise you (to be fair even if you can hear them they can be sneaky little gits when they want to be). On the other hand you don't need to worry about them so much in the Prawn - they can damage it if they attack, but they'll also tend to run if you hit them back (drill arm also works).
Also, my computer recently suffered a hardware fault that has resulted in losing all audio output. I've held off on playing Subnautica for pretty much the exact issue described here... Namely, just how many (important!) audio cues there are in the game, and how few tools they provide to work around them. Thou art a braver (or mayhaps more foolhardy) man than I, good sir.

And i just learn that if you feed him a peeper it will let you be (starts at 9:46)

If you use a gravity trap near one leviathan location, the fishes trapped will get the leviathan to eat them and it seems that he less attacks you.
