Detecting Reaper Levithan without Sound
First off. Let me say that I am born deaf.

I was out wandering in the west, dune biome I think, in my prawn suit looking for a second drill arm fragment (over 30 hours and yes I don't have it).

I got lucky spot one just laying there. So I got out to scan it.

So as soon I unlocked the blueprint. I open up the tablet to look what the material requirement was while looking at prawn inventory.

I didn't see the reaper leviathan coming. My first warning was that prawn suit itself was suddenly shifted a few meter to the left. So I close the tablet and look. There was one right there above me!

So I put my drill arm concern aside for now. Got into my prawn suit and ran away from the reaper leviathan.

I mean I always knew there was one somewhere in the dune but I never saw it. Somehow I manage to get so close that it came.

Luckly I had reinforced diving suit AND my prawn suit had reinforcement. We both didn't take on any damage even although the prawn suit was definitely hit.

I was thinking of put a beacon at each aproximate reaper levitathan location so this don't happens. I am not sure if the reaper will actually attack the beacon or what.

Any other tips?

Reapers are set to the Dunes, the Mountains, the crash zone. You don't need to fear reaper's outside of those locations. There are maps with all reaper spawn locations, and youcane put them into picture frames so you have a constant reminder of where they are. You can also use beacons.

There is also a leviathan in the Grand Reef, as well as Blood Kelp, but they aren't reapers.

Sound is the most important thing when detecting a reaper, as you hear them long before you see them, but for you, I think these wouldbe the best options. And of course, keep a sharp eye out when you are in those areas.

If you are unsure about what biome you are in, you can hit f1 to check.

Now I have to ask, and I hope this isn't rude, but how is the experience of Subnautica without Audio? Are you still finding yourself unnerved, and able to immerse yourself in the game?

One quick tip would be to not open the tablet while in these dangerous areas. I keep exploring them again and again and i always hear the reapers but even if i dont see them i spent as little time as possible in these bioms :)
You should maybe do the same. Just pick up what you need then quickly look around and then leave.

I didnt try it myself yet, but i noticed that the scanner room can detect reefbacks, so it might work aswell with other leviathan class creatures. If it does, make sure you get the upgrade chip for your suit so that the signals get shown to you all the time.

I just checked, and I can confirm this. The scanner ( Make sure you have 3 range and 1 speed ) In the area that has reapers will infact scan reapers. Just get the HUD chip as stated above.

Also it seems it's only Reapers and Reefbacks.

Edit: I guess I hit my post limit. Scanner base range is low, it increases by 50m for each upgrade, so an extra 150m. Plenty or range for you to work in the area with relative safely. I can't reply anymore. gg

@Philosoraptor.

Yeah I am able to have fun with the game. I am mostly looking for new material at this point. Also looking for a way down to lava level. I have prawn/cyclop/seamoth and they can go down to 700 to 900 meter. But I have not found any area more deeper than 500 meter at the moment. I believe I found a way into lost river but a ghost leviathan chased me out...

Yes I do have a scanner room but I only have one at mountain currently but I could add more in other location. I didn't build many becaus the scanner's room range seems limited?

I mostly use visual clue like darkening green hue of the kelp forest and subtle darkening as you go deeper into biome blood kelp area with octoblob thing. There are usually enough to navigate by.

Proximity alarm added to the sonar module might work for this, if a predator you have scanned comes close, you get a flashing warning on your hud.

When you get your hands on the cyclops, there is an upgrade module for it that installs a sonar. It drains alot of power, but visualizes nearby terrain and fauna as a red grid in front of you. This includes leviathans, and is useful to detect things when they are out of visual range.

Yes I already have the sonar upgrade for my seamoth and noticed you can see them this way. Not cyclop although. it would be nice to have sonar for prawn but that may be asking too much.

Wow, I have to say, that must be terrifying. I find Reapers to be terrifying, even when I can hear them, so much of my safety and comfort in this game comes from that all around you sense you get from the audio cues.

After reading your story, I really would love to see the devs add subtitles for 'Danger' audio cues, maybe with a little directional arror glowing in red to give a rough indication of location around you.

So impressed by your bravery!

Only other thing that I can add from killing one recently, is that even if he grabs you in your Prawn (punch his stoopid face), then you're only going to take about a quarter damage on the suit before he lets you go and usually retreats. You can take four to five "mouth fights" before your Prawn will go POP!

Finally, try taking some Oculus fish with you (you can find them in the Jelly Shroom Caves), keep them on your hotbar. Not 100% sure if it still works, but it used to be that if you were holding an Oculus fish, when the Reaper bit your character, he would eat the Oculus and not hurt you. Similar to feeding Stalkers using Peepers.

Cyclops has an in-built short range scan that will highlight nearby aggressive fauna with a yellow marker. It'll turn red if they decide to attack the Cyclops. Would be useful to have in the other vehicles.
The main issue with Reapers is they prefer to attack from behind so if you can't hear them they're likely to surprise you (to be fair even if you can hear them they can be sneaky little gits when they want to be). On the other hand you don't need to worry about them so much in the Prawn - they can damage it if they attack, but they'll also tend to run if you hit them back (drill arm also works).

Update: I was able to find one lost river entrance via mountain/bulb area. Just need to find some material from down there.
CrazyGoblin Jan 30, 2018 @ 3:53pm
A note regarding scanner rooms: While they can indeed point out the locations of leviathan-class organisms in the surrounding area, they will not be able to *pinpoint* those locations. It will give you an exact location at the time of the scan, but after that the leviathan markers tend to be pretty iffy as the scanner room does not update as often as the leviathan does... Still, it's probably going to be more accurate than setting up beacons yourself.

Also, my computer recently suffered a hardware fault that has resulted in losing all audio output. I've held off on playing Subnautica for pretty much the exact issue described here... Namely, just how many (important!) audio cues there are in the game, and how few tools they provide to work around them. Thou art a braver (or mayhaps more foolhardy) man than I, good sir.

And i just learn that if you feed him a peeper it will let you be (starts at 9:46)

If you use a gravity trap near one leviathan location, the fishes trapped will get the leviathan to eat them and it seems that he less attacks you.

just in case you havent found any parts yet, theres a ton in the grand reef wreck near the floating island, as well as moon pool fragments and thermal plant fragments

I already found enough fragement for drill arm. I just need cyclop sonar and prawn torpedo arm. I am sure I am missing a few blueprint but those are what I am looking for now.
