RIP Marblemelon
Not sure when they nerfed this, but the melon is pretty damn pointless now. It takes longer to grow, takes up more space while only giving you one at a time, and gives off less nutrition and energy than potatoes.

When potatoes are your star attraction, the entire farming process becomes moot. Better off farming peepers or even just using the heat knife. RIP farming in Subnautica.

Why not just farm those trees that give you juice and food?

they nerfed those too if I recall... however, melons are still worthy of your time, since they still are edible, and every bit helps.

Marblemelons might grow slower, but one indoor-planter with only those keeps you sustained EASILY.

Eat three, knife one = replace all four with the new seeds. Double that in an emergency. In any case, you will always have enough marblemelons. You'll also be able to comfortly keep a bio-reactor running that way.

For bio-reactor, melons work, yes.. but switch to a fish farm ASAP since peepers and Reginalds are way more efficient.

Lanterns are really good too while being low maintanence. A single pot grows multiple fruits, doesn't need to be replanted, and gives 325 per. Doesn't give the 750 of a peeper, but much less resources and space to do.

Then I'd have needed way more salt for curing it though, no thanks. Marblemelons are completely okay if you actually plan and manage your expeditions. I only carried some bottles of water with me while en-route.

I've completed the game with almost exclusively eating marblemelons, only keeping nutrient-blocks and water in the cyclops for emergencies. Whenever I needed food en-route I just get out and used my thermoblade on fish that passed by, there's always SOME fish.

Bulbo Tree are basically OP, they give plenty food and water and you only really need 2 max 4 planted on your sub for infinate food and water, just use 2-4 plant pots at back of engine room and you never need food or water again unless your spending long time away from the Cyclops

A single indoor grow bed with marblemelons sustained both food and water needs no problem from the moment I discovered them until the end of the game.

Their still op. Once you have made 2 indoor grow beds worth of melons, your health is rarely an issue anymore since they fully grow in like a day or 2.

Mine fully grow back when leave and come back later.

pft food and water in this game is so easy to keep on top of without any effort needed

Two pots of potatoes do the same job but better. They take up less space, they grow faster, they are less work (one seed gets you many potates, unlimited if you don't take the last they I just grow back) and they give you more food. They actually give more food then all the plants now.

My point isn't that you can't survive on them, it's that they are pointless. Not only are potatoes superior in every way (they even produce more energy in the reactor) but they are both blown away by simply sticking to fish. The fish were always more effective but waiting until you build an aquarium and waiting for them to reproduce used to balance that. Now it's no contest. One pot of potatoes will get you through until then with another of anything for power and that's it. Farming done. No need for melons or fruit, they are just a waste of time.

You think the melon are a waste, I say otherwise. I never rely on the bio or nuclear for pwr since req too much effort. Thermal and solar does everything I need w/ 0 effort. The melons has a unique trait that allow it to be the best item foodwise. The seed it produces take 1 space in the growbed. If you jam the entire bed w seeds, they can fully grow to their 4 tile size while still remaining in their 1 tile seed space. It turns 4 tile when you put in you inventory. This makes the melon the highest food AND water gain than anything that exist.

You get 4 seeds back per 1 knife to 1 melon and you do it while it is still in the growbed.

Late game, the still suit will provide water needs and thermal blade provide food needs long term.
