they nerfed those too if I recall... however, melons are still worthy of your time, since they still are edible, and every bit helps.
Eat three, knife one = replace all four with the new seeds. Double that in an emergency. In any case, you will always have enough marblemelons. You'll also be able to comfortly keep a bio-reactor running that way.
For bio-reactor, melons work, yes.. but switch to a fish farm ASAP since peepers and Reginalds are way more efficient.
Lanterns are really good too while being low maintanence. A single pot grows multiple fruits, doesn't need to be replanted, and gives 325 per. Doesn't give the 750 of a peeper, but much less resources and space to do.
Then I'd have needed way more salt for curing it though, no thanks. Marblemelons are completely okay if you actually plan and manage your expeditions. I only carried some bottles of water with me while en-route.
I've completed the game with almost exclusively eating marblemelons, only keeping nutrient-blocks and water in the cyclops for emergencies. Whenever I needed food en-route I just get out and used my thermoblade on fish that passed by, there's always SOME fish.
Mine fully grow back when leave and come back later.
My point isn't that you can't survive on them, it's that they are pointless. Not only are potatoes superior in every way (they even produce more energy in the reactor) but they are both blown away by simply sticking to fish. The fish were always more effective but waiting until you build an aquarium and waiting for them to reproduce used to balance that. Now it's no contest. One pot of potatoes will get you through until then with another of anything for power and that's it. Farming done. No need for melons or fruit, they are just a waste of time.
You get 4 seeds back per 1 knife to 1 melon and you do it while it is still in the growbed.
Late game, the still suit will provide water needs and thermal blade provide food needs long term.
