As far as I know from my games nothing seems to happen if you take longer than 24 hours. I remember reading somewhere that the radiation disappears completely around the Aurora once you have repaired the core after a couple of days.
If you are seriously worried about it however, you can reach the drive core without a laser cutter! You need one to fully explore the Aurora but you don't need one to do this part of the story
EDIT: Also if you want a hint for finding diamonds early on: Go to lifepod 17 if you have the waypoint to it. There are some enterances into the Jellyshroom caves around that area and in there you will find shale deposits, that can give you diamonds. There are a few locations that would be easier to obtain them without a seamoth however they would require you to know where you're going, so this ones a bit easier to spot for newer players
I went to the Aurora just now, *way* after it exploded (a new play"through" after 2.0 was released). And that text pops up even though it appears to be too late anyway. Bad game, no cookie.
