Predator fighting
Hello

I am looking at this game with a curious eye, but there some things that perplexe me.

I saw in streams that there are big predators in the game, but from the live's I have seen, the tactic is mostly to run away from them. Later I saw a submarine, but I never saw anyone actively attacking the creatures. I think there is a gun that kinda slows them down, but thats it.

So the question is: Do you hunt in this game? Afaik you only catch fish, literally. But what about bigger prey? Can you even fight them in your machines and if yes, is there some sort of benefit to it?

there's some non-lethal options for the smaller submersable and the exosuit can punch or drill but besides that there's only a knife or getting creative with the propulsion gun. everything else is avoidance or escape devices
Killing anything serves no real purpose except for self-defense in extenuating circumstances (like a predator not leashing to its home biome and following you around the map).

Hunting is limited to snaring prey fish with a Grav Trap, Stasis Rifle, or Propulsion Cannon. Later on you can craft a Thermoblade that cooks edible fish on the spot when you kill them with it.

For medium-sized and larger threats, killing is more or less out of self-defense as you are encouraged and intended to evade.

As far as vehicles go, the Seamoth has the Perimeter Defense System (a chargeable AoE electric discharge) and the Torpedo Module (fires either Vortex Torpedoes, which disorient the target, or Gas Pod Torpedoes which does do a minuscule amount of damage).

The PRAWN Suit can melee with the default and drill arms, throw things for damage with the Propulsion Cannon arm, and fire the aforementioned torpedoes with the Torpedo Launcher arm.

The closest thing the Cyclops gets to weaponry is a force field generator and a torpedo bay that fires Creature Decoys.

TL;DR: The most efficient way to kill stuff if you’re into that sort of thing is the Stasis n’ Stab method. Freeze with a Stasis Rifle, cut the victim up while frozen, and reapply stasis as needed until dead.

So predators dont even drop loot, like maybe unique items? This is the weakest survival design I have ever seen. I suppose they should have called it "Cowardnautica"

They’re wild animals, not mobs in an RPG. Some of them do have unique items associated with them but you can only get them by indirect means.

No hunting of monsters.
TBH once you become familiar with the biggest creatures you realize they can be mostly ignored, or if you're in the Cyclops (the larger of the 2 subs) you turn on your shield for a few seconds if they notice you.

For the smaller predators, the several different shark-like things, you just avoid them if possible (usually you can't) or swipe them once with a knife and they'll leave you alone for a few seconds, then turn around and come right back to attack you. However once you get the PRAWN suit, which is not good for exploring, you can pincer arm or drill arm them to death easy.

There's torpedo's in the game, but in almost 200 hours of playing the game during early access I've never crafted any because I thought the upgrade slots were better used for other things instead of adding a torpedo bay to the Seamoth (small sub), and I wanted a drill arm + grappling arm on the PRAWN suit and didn't make the topedo launcher arm. So I can't say how deadly they are, but their description makes them sound less-than-useful for killing sharks and leviathans.

There's no benefit to trying to kill anything for the most part. "Warpers" are the biggest pain in the behind because they warp you out of your Seamoth / PRAWN and slice you, and are the only thing I actually want to kill, but they are pretty much impossible to kill due to warping away once they take a little damage.

Yes they drop mytic items after you farm enough of them you face their boss in a mytic raid. if you can kill that boss with the enchanted weapons that dropped from other creatures gratz you finished the game

If you have a 3DS, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate and Monster Hunter Generations are pretty good. If you have a recent console, or can wait 6+ months for the PC release Monster Hunter World just released. This may not be the game for you. Different types of games appeal to different people.

Indeed, now I personally want to buy dont starve, since that game is all about survival, while this one is all about running away, which is stupid if all the game you uncover more and more advanced technology. Stupid game design.

This game is a unique genre blend. It utilizes survival, horror aspects, and plays like a metroidvania (focus is on exploring, progress is made by utilizing new items, etc.). The lack of lethal weapons is to enhance the horror factor, especially when it comes to Leviathan-type creatures (which you generally hear before you see).

Horror? Aren't you exagurrating a little bit? Horror is built on things you don't see, while this game even provides you with a sub with a radar, so you know where everything is. Unless you only dive at night everywhere or only so deep that tere's no light, there's little to fear here.

The horror is less jump scares and more subtle. You feel unnerved when all you can see around you is open blue water. Empty surface above, inky blackness below. You have no idea what could be living around here, if anything is at all. It’s the fear of the unknown.

It's like you've never encountered a leviathan.
