Sometimes it happens.. certain fish swim off somewhere and make the place look a little empty.
One time my lifepod floated off too.. well actually it's more accurate to say a Reefback migrated into the safe shallows and stole my lifepod.. which then caused it to float away.. miles away.. like thousands of kilometers away..
Animals move around that's all i'm trying to say lol
Could be that my first save was bugged or not, but I'm more inclined to believe it is working as intented. You need at least 2 of them in an allian containment for them to breed more as well.
I plant four marblemelon seeds into a single plant pot, then when they ripen, I consume three marblemelons and destroy the last one with the knife, yielding four marblemelon seeds. Replant the seeds, and the cycle repeats. It's completely free and renewable. In fact, I don't even use airsacks to create water anymore in any of my playthroughts, regardless of what stage I'm at.
They are most likely still spawning , just not staying alive long enough for you to notice them
At least untill I restart the game, as hunger/thirst mechanics are just nuisance and an annoyance to deal with and doesn't bring anything real challenging or exiting to the game.
Watch them as they produce little baby fish
