Sometimes it happens.. certain fish swim off somewhere and make the place look a little empty.

One time my lifepod floated off too.. well actually it's more accurate to say a Reefback migrated into the safe shallows and stole my lifepod.. which then caused it to float away.. miles away.. like thousands of kilometers away..
Animals move around that's all i'm trying to say lol

Well for my last try on hardcore last week I also plucked them all out of the water and I also noticed them stop spawning in new ones. On the save I'm running currently though I only plucked a few and left at least 2 in an area. And guess what, new ones are still spawning even when I'm currently way past the point I was in the previous save.

Could be that my first save was bugged or not, but I'm more inclined to believe it is working as intented. You need at least 2 of them in an allian containment for them to breed more as well.

Besides the usual salt + coral recipe to fabricate water, you can always abuse the fast-growing marblemelon to hydrate yourself, so long as you time your consumption carefully...

I plant four marblemelon seeds into a single plant pot, then when they ripen, I consume three marblemelons and destroy the last one with the knife, yielding four marblemelon seeds. Replant the seeds, and the cycle repeats. It's completely free and renewable. In fact, I don't even use airsacks to create water anymore in any of my playthroughts, regardless of what stage I'm at.

Might be a higher than normal predator population in the area too. They chase after the little fish and Bladder fish are kinda slow so basically a free meal.

They are most likely still spawning , just not staying alive long enough for you to notice them

I still use the airsacks to make bottles of water, they don't decay and give you more time outside before the need to return to the planterbox. And no I'm not taking the cyclops on every prolongued trip I do.

At least untill I restart the game, as hunger/thirst mechanics are just nuisance and an annoyance to deal with and doesn't bring anything real challenging or exiting to the game.

Have you tried going to other biomes for a bit to allow the area to reset itself? Besides that, the devs did a good job of making most resources unlimited, for example you can get water from coral tube samples and salt as sdarkpaladin mentioned and from the filtration machine. Bladderfish are mostly for when you just start out.

To be honest both salt and corals can be found as soon as you get a knive. And your initial water will last you that long just fine.

The salt you find in the open will however dry out, and depending on how fast you explore and advance getting to the part it is unlimited can take a while ;)

Ehhhh, sort of, but not really, you find a ton of water in Aurora.

Go to another biome, it takes a while for fish to respawn.

...darned fishing limits...

You can also breed them if you found fragments of the big aquarium.

Watch them as they produce little baby fish
