Why? Well, we don't know. However, they are considering it as a map idea is in their maybe list.

Most games like this are nice to have maps in. However, most games like this also have randomly generated maps. Subnautica has a static pre-generated map that never changes no matter how many times you make a new save. You get a feel for the place over time, especially when you get lost. :3

Possibly sometime after 1.0, from what I have heard in the past.

I like to think it's because your character cannot find that map tech to scan it and use it. ;)

Maps make games feel smaller and getting lost in this game adds to the thrill and scare factor and I honestly think a map would make me lazy and not learn this new world by exploring every inch myself. I place down beacons and name them at locations of interest such as destroyed lifepods, cave entrances, naming biomes etc.

I somewhat agree here, as the PDA data was corrupted, which is why I think we have to scan for blueprints. Reading your points, I do agree here, as beacons are a pretty cool way to go!

As you prigress ypur seamoth and cyclopse can vet an echo scanner thing from ehat i remember. At that point theres no excuse why you cant have a player created "fog of war" type map that is created as you explore to help you navigate.. ESPECIALLY when you get below 1000

The game is fairly linear below 600 meters. I'm not sure a map is truly required to be honest. Once you figure out where things are, a map would just clutter your screen. I never have a moment in game where I say man I could really use a map right now.

I recently tried out The Long Dark and although not my favourite game, I really liked their approach on mapping:
you basically use a resource/consumable to map a small seciton of the map around your location.

This doesn't have a negative effect on mystery and exploration, but still gives you all the advantages a map would.
Not as mundane as simply just revealing everything where you go, but still better than just the beacons.

This. Like another survival game, The Long Dark, getting lost or not heightens the player's awareness to surroundings and increases the immersion

Sadly the developers have no plans to put maps back in the game, but I really do hope they add a mapping system someday.

While a map could be nice I can understand why they haven't got it in the game now. For now I just put a map in the screenshots folder of the save so that I can bring it up in a picture frame.

I thought it was a design decision, being a survival horror explore game essentially. I thought the beacons were there so you don't need a map. The game would be over pretty quick if you didn't need to explore.

Thats why im saying fog of war style mapping.

Fog of war means the map is made as you and explore around.

Not a bad idea. But what would the point of beacons be?

A 3d-map of already explored regions, or scanned by seamoth/cyclop would be nice.
