Somewhat, but a stasis rifle is more effective.
Vortex ones are just fun and will fling them off into the distance.
The problem isn't so much that their useless, so much as the other options are just much more useful that they look so by comparison.
It's only on the prawn they stack, though I find that gives less space then they do in total for the seamoth.
And don't worry about getting close to the Aurora for danger. There are plenty of other places you get to meet big fish.
