Vending Machines
Unlike in Below Zero (which is what gave me my Subnautica Big Boy Pants:tm:), you can use the vending machines in this...
holy heck. I just need to make a ton of water so I won't run out for a while and bam, I'll rarely have to go out for food! Still, cooking food with a knife is SOO satisfying..

If you can find the coffee machine you can live off of nothing by snacks. All of which will crunch when you consume them. Don't ask why, you'll sleep better not knowing.

That or find and build a water purifier (there's one out in the dunes to the west of the map, very easy to find with how flat the ground out there is).

Or.... Make an indoor growbed. Never go out again and you still get to use your knife to gather your food. Best of both worlds.

Yeah, that'd be great for me since I tend to suck at managing hunger when I'm making stuff, but I don't have anything that can make water yet...

The key word there is "yet".
Just keep exploring, scanning ALL THE THINGS(!) (yes, all caps) and you will be fine soon enough. If you're having trouble staying alive for thurst you're best bet is to make bleach for drinking.

That and half the stuff you can grow has a high enough water content to help with both food and drink.

Yep! I just need some of the stuff so I can grow coral and plants. I do have the blueprints for the purifier, but I don't have aerogel. My current goal is to get an alien containment ATM

I always wondered why you get endless snacks and coffee. The reason is simple: it takes quite a while to get it and doesnt reg you as much. Its easier to build a couple of water purifiers and hunt some fish once in a while ( use grav trap )

so you cant actually lame around with that at least im not doing that. But you may put it in your cyclops to have some emergency nutrient

If you're going for "emergency nutrient" in a cyclops, much like with a base, you're better of building a pot or two to grow plants in.
Personally I find the grownbed takes up too much space in a cyclops for what you need from it.

Save the vending machines for your leisure sub you use on your days off.

I don't think you can grow coral, but there is an unlimited supply of the yellow (tube) kind and table coral is plentiful.

True, except for brain coral. Grow your own air!
Makes tending your underwater garden easier if you are going to be out there for a while.
