Steam Controller Support
I purchased Subnautica today and was wanting to use it with my Steam Controller. Sadly it's not responding to the controller. Loading a community config didn't fix the issue either.

Does anyone know how to get it working? (If it can)

UPDATE/FIX: Solution was to use a mouse to check the 'controller' setting in the menu

We normally test with Steam controllers, Xbox & PS4 controllers, but we're away from some of them for the Xmas break. Make sure you have the controller enabled in the Controller settings, as sometimes it needs manually turned on.
No, problems here!
Especially steam controller is incredible awesome!

Yeah, it's in the Options menu. You have to check the box using a mouse :P

I should add: here's couple of quirks you should be aware of when using a controller. Quick slots are a pain to use with a controller because you can only assign an item to the next open slot starting from left to right (using Xbox "A" button), or if all slots are already filled it will be assigned to slot 1 and all other items will scroll right and the last item will drop off. This is problematic later in the game when you have that 6th and 7th tool you need to occasionally use. You either have to accept the fact that your prime slots (1 and 5), which are the quickest to access with a single left or right press on the d-pad, will not be static (IE: stasis rifle in slot 5 will drop off when cutting tool is assigned to slot 1), ORRR... you have to keep a keyboard and mouse on hand so you can assign the item to the exact slot so the other items don't scroll (assigning an item to a slot using kbd/mouse is done by hovering over the item and pressing 1-5). It is the quick assign function to specific slots that is missing with the controller and it is REALLY annoying!

Another annoying thing about using a controller relates to the behavior of the "B" button when menus are onscreen. If you are in the Seamoth or Prawn and you view the PDA or bring up the Pause menu, then you press the "B" button expecting to exit the menu, your character will instead exit the vehicle (while the PDA or Pause menu is still up). You can actually see your character exiting the vehicle behind the transparent PDA or Pause menu and the Goggles graphic will border the screen to confirm this. You can then press B again and exit PDA/Pause, but you will find yourself floating outside your vehicle and potentially exposed to hostile creatures! Very annoying bug! Character control should be disabled while these menus are up and this seems like an easy bug to fix, but I saw a message elsewhere about this issue from early 2017! Please, PLEASE fix this, devs!

Thank you for the response! This was the thing which fixed it, just had to use a mouse to get there. :)

It's a shame controller support doesn't work in this game, I really don't want to play it with a keyboard and mouse.

I've just bought the game, and it looks like the controller works but there's no actual profile for it. I've been using it as an xbox 360...?

Guys, can someone tell me what im doing wrong. I cant see a "controller" setting which i need to tick in the menu anywhere, really frustrating. thanks

Any chance you’re using Steam Link? You need to plug the controller into the pc first, set it up in the game, then move it to Steam Link because it’s not recognized through the Link.

I can confirm the PS2 controller partially works out of the box (no emulators). It works fine aside from the right stick not workin in the y axis, look up/ look down. In 7 Days to Die it does 100% out of the box, it's funny in some Unity games it does work in some it doesn't.

Doesn't work for me - even after reading this just spent over 3 hours now trying to get some sort of sense out of the steam contrller with this and nothing. Bizzarly managed to start the game once with it and it sort of worked but then I couldn't enter any of the options. No idea what's going on as it works for every other game it should do for me and I don't think I'm a complete doughnut.

Edit: Been going at it for another hour and worked out that if I start it (like to the point that I have navigated the menus and started playing) with my Xbox contrller (with a USB adapter) wired in and then once started unplug the Xbox contoller and plug the Steam controller dongle in then it works. But then when I want to quit I can get the menu up but can't scroll down it with the controller but I can sort of intermitently with head movement but this is kind of random so I sit there for like 20 seconds contorting my head until I manage to get Quit highlighted and then press the mouse button and I can quit. Re-plugging the Xbox controller at this point does not work. Alternativley I can start up my wands and quite using them but if these are on while playing then the steam controller won't work. The easiest way to quite is to ctrl del out of it. What a fu£$%£nk mess!

I want to play with the steam contrller over the xbox controlle by the way because I have a tpcast which allows me to swivel around in my chair to turn around which I much prefer to turning with the controller but I need a wireles one and the only wireless one I have is the steam controller and I don't think I'm going to by a wireless xbox controller just for this game (just thought I'd explain that in case you were wondering!)

I'm on mac OS and I can't see a Controller option in the Options menu. Does the option only appear before you launch the game or something? I'm not using steam link btw.

It should be available in the Options Menu:

Perhaps it doesn't have controller support for Mac if you don't see that panel.

I found it, but it is a little erratic. The Controller option is in the Options menu before you start the game, but wasn't in the Options menu during the game. When I enabled it before the game, it still didn't appear in the in-game menu at first, but switching back and forth between the in-game menu and game a couple of times fixed it. Have played for about an hour and like the game, but have to stop now because it is giving me bad motion sickness :(
