Is Subnautica for the Thalassophobic (afraid of the ocean)?
?So I was planning on getting Subnautica and getting other games as gifts for friends. I remember I have 2 friends who are thalassophobic. They're afraid to even look at pictures of the darkness/depths of the ocean, even of shallow beaches at times, and of pictures of large aquatic animals. I was thinking of maybe getting Subnautica as a means of trying to ease their fears. I mean I know they might be too afraid to even try it but there's still the possibility. I know it might not translate to real-life change, but since their phobias are mostly visual-related I was thinking it might be worth a try. What do you guys think?

The more you play it the sooner you get over your fears. I refuse to swim in water, for the most part, if I can't see the bottom.

This game does a great job tapping into basic and primordial fears. Even if you don't have thalassophobia, you're still going to get scared by something. This game could be great for getting over fears. You just need to remember that it's all a game. If you want a more straight answer though...

hahahahaha i remember that thread.
With the new updates i heard they added something to stop players going into the void, didn't know what it was i was expecting fatigue to kick in or something....
Got to 1.7k metres with a seaglide and all the music just went dead silent.
Then i saw something blue and glowing the ghost leviathan and i was like NOPE ♥♥♥♥ THAT and zoomed back to my seamoth at maximum velocity.

Never going down there again.
So hey it works! :D

YES! I am extremely thalassophobic and Subnautica is very cathartic to play for me. In the game I'm made to face my fears which is one of the best ways to get over them. When I very first started playing subnautica I was sold by the beautiful seemingly "safe" atmosphere that the game gave off. Little did I know of all the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ terrors hiding deep deep (and sometimes not so deep, hello reaper leviathan) in this oceanic hell hole of a planet. So at one point the game scared me so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bad I couldn't even go to certain parts of the map (LOL) for fear of encountering a reaper or anything that would scare the ♥♥♥♥ out of me. Then I learned that in order to progress in the game and build myself a cyclops etc I would have to eventually overcome my fears of certain areas (like the blood kelp zone, idk why it just really freaked me out especially considering how deep and dark under it is.). Now after about 20 hours of playing im less afraid of reapers and the scarier biomes and will venture there, usually not of my own free will but if I have to. Except the void. I will go NOWHERE near that ♥♥♥♥ the feeling of nothing but black open ocean all around and below me freaks me the ♥♥♥♥ out. I also stay away from the zone that spawns 6 reapers because ♥♥♥♥ that as well. So you never know, this game may help you overcome your thalassophobia but at the same time know it will also feed on it. I love this game now though. I just built my first cyclops and am so excited to go explore EVERYWHERE! so have fun and good luck with your fear.

Yea, they do say that to overcome a phobia, you need small doses and see that they don't hurt you. Subnautica is pretty good in that aspect. Tell them there is a God mode and it should help.

I am afraid as hell too. It is possible but it will take them a LOT of stressfull hours and 10x the amount of time to advance. In the beginning I would return to my base at dusk and leave it again at dawn.
I remember something like my 2nd hour of gaming and I was searching for stuff, forgetting about my location. BOOM nighttime. Between me and my base there was a great basin of water.... Alt F4.

Would you like to mention anything more on the subject as you have duplicated a more recent post "I have thalassophobia, is subnautica scary?" by slappy dated 26th July. :D even commented on that post and I am surprised that he didn't mention it.
