Did the air bladder get made obsolete
Hadn't played in a bit and started a new game recently, only to find one of my earliest goals, an air bladder, seemed to be completely useless. By aiming up and swimming forward while holding space, I can ascend faster than the air bladder will get me there. Additionally it no longer stays inflated when you switch off it. As it now stands, I never see using it again as everything else outperforms it at this point.

Yeah, I was noticing that as well.

It picks up speed as it goes, so much so that you will blast 20+ feet into midair if you breach the surface after a long ascent (and stick there in midair, slightly buggy). Therefore, it's more useful at lower depths.

Still, the Seaglide is faster or close enough to it, so yeah, the air bladder is an early-game item. Nothing wrong with that, in my opinion. Even if the bladder were super-fast, you will eventually stop using it anyway because you'll just climb into your vehicle to refresh O2, and also you'll be exploring great depths and massive caverns where it won't even remotely be able to save you.

Now, if air bladders could be attached to the Prawn as inflatable ballast, that would be dank, but the developers seem to think that allowing the Prawn to ascend without suffering through staring at cave walls for 15 minutes would make it too OP. Ah well.

I'm still using it in early game. There was 1 time I got it out and activated it and I ascended slowly, but all the other times it seems as fast as it used to be.

Very glad they added the auto-deflate - otherwise what you have is "The Magic Bag of Ascension".

Early on it can be useful if you overextend in open waters, because it adds quite a bit of speed while moving upwards. Once you have a vehicle like seamoth or prawn it becomes pretty useless though, yes.

It's not useless and it's absoutely faster than swimming 70m to the surface. That said, it's usefulness doesn't go beyond getting the seamoth. Once you have the seamoth the air bladder becomes obsolete and I leave it in the lifepod locker, there it remains.
