Where to find bladderfish
Hi,

Searched around the forums and can't seem to find any results. I've been playing for a few hours and seem to have exhausted my supply of bladderfish around me.

I'm still trying to find gold so that I can build a CPU which will allow me to build the fabricator which will then finally hopefully allow me to start building my little settlement, in which I'll hopefully be able to build a water something something.

Do the bladderfish respawn or is there a "home" I can go to in order to catch some?

Thanks!

If I remember correctly they tend to be around most near-surface biomes. Have you tried the kelp forests? I don't think they respawn, but I might be wrong.

For gold, there are some sandstone deposits in the safe shallows. If you go to the the large thermal vent in the shallows, and time your dives correctly, there are some deposits in the caves in the walls of the vent.

Thanks for the info, I clearly don't know enough about the game to understsand what the "safe shallows" refers to? I'm also assuming the kelp forests is that area close to your life pod that has those yellow seeds?

Sorry, total n00b here :S

The safe shallows is the biome you start in, and the kelp forests are indeed the areas with the creepvines. There's usually still some fish around there. The safe shallows are mostly devoid of things trying to hurt you, hence the name.

Depending on where you started (my new game put my lifepod right next to the thermal vent), I'd recommend heading a few hundred metres south. You might discover more of the shallows, and the location of more bladderfish.

Fish do respawn but it takes a very long time. Living off fish alone is not sustainable. You need to resource hunt pronto and gold should be in the safe shallows/kelp forest area.

Spoiler Alert: not like story spoilers but location spoilers

you need to get your butt down in the mushroom caves to find an abandoned base down there that has a water filtration system in it. Also start heading south towards the shadowy area of the map to find an island and other bases so you can get the multipurpose room and start farming those awesome marble melons.

Also try using a gravisphere, and leave it for a while and check if it caught any bladder fish.

What Lucki suggested is ideal, though if you are so new that finding gold has been difficult thus far... You may struggle to get into that cave because of it's depth... So a friendly tip "Oxygen tanks stack" meaning if you have 1 equipped, and another in your inventory... it adds up your total time you can stay under water :), after crafting a few of these you should be able to make it deep enough into the cave for what Lucki reccomended.

Also The floating island is not really that far from where you start, and it provides a ton of quality of life items for starting out - Multipurpose room - Edible plant life (Marblemelons MMM) planters - ect... This is one of the first things I do at the start of a playthrough

You cant stack them anymore.

Thanks for this vault of knowledge! How do you figure out what the area you're in is called?

Also, how do you figure out which way you're facing? I remember that was like the very first thing I got confused about as every game comes with a compass yet this one doesn't or am I completely missing it on the screen??
amckenzie4 Jun 22, 2017 @ 6:14am
The area you start in is called the Safe Shallows, because, well, it's shallow and (relatively) safe. If you press F1, you'll get a debug window that tells you where you are.

You need to find the blueprints for the compass, unfortunately. It's one of the few major disagreements I have with the developers of this game: how is a compass not standard gear in the survival suit? Anyway, if you can build a repair tool and repair the comm relay in the pod, it will start giving you locations to check out. My memory is that the compass blueprint is at one of those. In the meantime, the nose of the Aurora points roughly Northeast, so you can at least sort of keep track of what direction things are in.

As to your original question: bladderfish are not the only source of water. You can use the knife to knock samples of coral loose: common coral + salt = bleach, and the fabricator in the pod can turn bleach into purified water. Later on you'll find blueprints for a better way to get water.

Cool, thanks :)

Would love if they make some sort of Map that just highlights the various biomes, that would be great.

Wouldn't it, though? I'm still pretty confused that a survival pod doesn't have any kind of mapping tools at all.

If you like spoilers, the wiki (http://subnautica.wikia.com) has a lot of useful information, and a bunch of maps. I've been using the map basically to figure out which biome I'm in, and which direction to go to get where I want to go. But if you don't like spoilers, don't even look at the site... there's pretty much no way to avoid at least SOME spoilers.

An easy source of water early on is through bleaching sea water with salt and common coral samples. They hydrate much more than bladderfish and are also much more common.

Thanks, looks like I have my water issue under control for now, or as long as I'm actually able to keep finding salt. Do the resources respawn or is does it run out eventually?

Also, I just ran out of oxygen for the first time (discovered a mushroom place and then got attacked by a snake that came out of it) and then blacked out and appeared inside my base. Is this ok or did I actually "loose" something in the process?

You know how it says "Inventory secured." whenever you return to your base? That means the game saves your current inventory as it is and when you die you will respawn with the inventory it last saved.

Ah, that's so awesome, thanks for the reply, I've been searching everywhere and couldn't find any definitive info.

Does the game save when you exit or must you manually save? I'm trying to understand if you could quit to menu and reload your save or if it's a "this is your one story" kind of game.
