Some creatures are attracted by light. Hence, while moving at night and using light from Flashlight / Sea Glider / Sea moth, etc, you become far more 'visible' yourself and are open to attack.
The other side of that is certain very large, very aggressive jerks gain another advantage. These sea moth eating SOB's don't track by light, but by echo location and can hone in on your position from a greater distance than your sight range at night. So while you hear that Leviathan Roar, you might not be able to spot where or if it's coming for you until it's too late.
Also below 500 meters or so it doesn't matter, the light is all locally generated.
.... now, if only we could replicate that Bioluminescant feel inside our bases. ( I WANT A BASE MODULATION / LIGHTING PANEL DAMNIT. Down with Flourescant lights! Rise to the Aquariums and Biolumi Fishies / coral!)
Only noticed this with Stalkers.
Creepvine lanterns are the way to go :>
