Technically, if you're listening for them and looking out for them, there's something to fear. I do get what you're saying, though.
I've never found this game much of a "survival" or "horror" game the way other people do. I think it's terrific, but it's too resource rich, and the predators aren't actually aggressive enough for either of those two genres. It's more of an exploration game, with a beautiful world, a sense of satisfaction from progression, and a neat storyline.
But yeah, while the predators are something to fear in the sense they can do harm, as long as you know what to look out for, and you're not stupid with your playstyle, generally there's nothing to be too concerned about.
