[Spoilers] How do deal with crabsquid
I put the spoiler tag because I'm discussing one of the abandoned bases.

With that out of the way, I've just found the deep grand reef base and have been trying to figure out how to explore it, but its being swarmed by 3-4 crabsquid that try to mob my seamoth every time I get close. Considering how fomidible these can be, I doubt I'd survive very long upon exiting the vehicle, even if I was able to make it inside the base. How can I get the squid to leave me alone while I poke around in the base?

They normally only attack you if you shine a light on them, so try turnning your lights off. Either that, or use the prawn to get in and out.

They've been chasing my seamoth in circles around the base even with the lights off...

They are also attracted to engine noises. You can use the stasis gun and freeze them or throw them away from you with the propulsion cannon.

You may want to switch to the prawn then. They tend to leave it alone and those that don't do after a punch or two.

Old trick with stasis rifle + knife works good enough with them. Just be sure to take spare knife as they tend to break.
And if you do not want to kill them just shoot seamoth with maximum charge and it will be safe long enough for you to collect some things inside the base.
I ended up parking my seamoth 100 or so meters away near the roof of the cavern and running in with my seaglide to actually loot the place. They still noticed me and one was able to eat half my health through the wall of the base, but I managed to get everything from inside.

For parked Seamoths they can indeed be dangerous... when I visited a certain abandoned seabase I had to go out and repair my Seamoth constantly.

When you are in your Seamoth or in a Cyclops, they're easy to avoid though (just occasional EMP-waves might hit you, aimed at you or not).

In a Prawn, they're no threat. They do very low damage to it and if you WANT them out of the way, the Prawn can easily kill them. They don't take the claws or drills that well.

I felt really bad for trying that out, it made me wish I killed a Reaper instead.

I have started exploring more with the prawn suit, but it comes with its own drawbacks. Being much slower than the seamoth, it can't avoid warpers and that particular base isn't exactly easy to get to without the grappling arm, which I only found after finding the base.

To be honest, aside from the passive modules, the grappler is something you should have on your Prawn whenever going deeper anyway though. The added mobility makes the Prawn a lot safer to use, and with some practice you can also chain the grappler with your Jumpjets to gain momentum, making the Prawn go a lot faster.

The next best upgrade is the Jet-Upgrade.

I recall the grappling hook actually used to make crabsquids warp clean out of the playfield at lightspeed, taking the grapple with it. That was funny.
