This is actually how the game says that it works. The fabricator takes water from outside. Also, the game would be less fun if we had to do micromanagement like that all the time.

I just enjoy the fact that mixing salt water with bleach yields potable drinking water. I'm guessing fabricator magic is involved.

The water around you is not safe to drink due to microorganisms and possibly salt. The fabricator uses the bleach to kill the bacteria so you can drink it.
