From videos of the closed beta I learned you can basically switch to your recruited tribemates (the NPCs) and gain from their different stats and maybe better abilitys.

What do I have to do to make it easier to deal with them?
I already have bone weapons and tools, but still cloth armor, but have already planted cotton for better armor
yes it was the same for me ^^
I usually pick them one by one with a bow and kite them a bit away.
with the bronze great bow I can oneshot headshot the most enemys with skill-shot (release the arrow when the arrow tip is glowing white)
yeah leather armor gives you better protection and more HP
also let your stuff craft from an experienced NPC
they have better chance to craft you epic or legendary quality items
AND! Buff food - broth for example > gives you 100 HP more
rosted pumpkin for better stamina
boiled eggs for a quickheal while moving (bandages take time and you can't move)
All that brought me to bronze gear without too much trouble.
reveal the map by subduing and interrogating the scouts, would be the way to tin and copper. to make bronze.
look at my map if you want an idea of where it is to find.
Copper is guarded (orange marker top left)
tin is easier to get (orange marker bottom left)

There are cotton farms on the Barracks Camp I think....I know one of the camps has cotton and pumpkins and I think Chili plants. I am on Bronze myself - you have plenty of areas for tin/copper.......make new bonfire camps closer to enemy camps for faster travel back after death if needed......I put my main base on the middle upper part of map near one of the enemy camps that has copper mine around it....its near the elite panther spot in the middle of the map when you are first playing - now that I have stone, the base looks much better - am trying to figure out a good farming area.....but the back and forth with some of the fertilizer is annoying....I have respecced my skills to work out different things at the end stage L30 - I thought you could just go a different path, but it makes you still put in wasteful skills in areas you are not using in order to get to later stage that you need.
Get your weapon/armour maxed out fast....its a lifesaver for extra hitpoints...make sure your trinkets are maxed out too......always have bandages/buffs/meal on you and when going in jungle keep using your SENSE every so often just so you do not run into something blindly - the panthers give you a QUICK warning - get your main weapon ready because you will be attacked very quickly unless you can spot it and maneuver yourself behind something when it does its SPRING ATTACK.....then just attack and move around without draining stamina too fast....if you do, move normally but move around the NPC so they cannot hit you and you gain stamina back before you wail on them again.
